Gurusar Sudhar youth murdered in Vancouver

A family of Gurusar Sudhar village, which had been preparing for the welcome of their Canada-based member, was shocked at the news that he was found murdered in a pick-up vehicle in Vancouver on January 14.

Campfire blast victim succumbs to injuries
Ludhiana, January 16
One of the injured labourers in the last evening’s blast in a campfire at Giaspura, Baba Nihal Chand, succumbed to injuries at Oswal Cancer Hospital this morning even as the police investigations found that a scrap bomb had exploded when it was accidentally put in the campfire by one of the labourers.

3 of family among seven hurt in mishaps

Seven person, including three of a family were injured in three different accidents last night. All the injured were taken to the local Civil Hospital. One of them was referred to a Patiala hospital.

BJP workers demonstrate against cops
Ludhiana, January 16
The ongoing confrontation between the local police and the district unit of the BJP reached a new high when a large number of party workers gathered at the Division No. 5 police station and raised slogans against the police inside the premises, with the policemen remaining mute spectators late last evening.

Land dispute: 24 persons booked, 11 tractors seized
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 16
Agitation by residents of nearby Bhogiwal village, in protest against trustees of a proposed polytechnic college, took a uturn when police here booked 24 persons including leader under Sections 447, 506, 148 and 149 and seized 11 tractors used for tilling the land forcibly.

Generation gap seems to be the reason behind murders of the two love-lorn couples, one in the city and the other in Jagraon, with their parents being held responsible for the barbaric killings.

15 labourers hurt in shed collapse
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 16
Panic spread among migrant labourers of the area with the news of 15 persons being injured due to collapse of a factory shed at nearby town Malerkotla on Friday. Four injured were admitted in DMC Hospital at Ludhiana. All others were discharged. Migrant labourers here kept visiting various hospitals to see if any of the injured was related to them.

Two unidentified motor cycle borne youths snatched a bag containing Rs 3000 and some documents from an Akali leader in Ghumar Mandi last evening.

Traders burn VAT effigy, seek uniform Act
Traders burn an effigy of VAT in Ludhiana on Sunday. Ludhiana, January 16
Led by functionaries of the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal (PPBM), a large number of traders and representatives of more than 50 bodies of trade and industry, today held an angry demonstration against the “anti-trade” polices of the state government and burnt an effigy of Punjab VAT (value-added tax) at Chowk Mata Mandir here.

BKU detects spurious fertiliser factory
Samrala, January 16
A deputation of the Bharatiya Kisan Union workers lead by Mr Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, its National President, met SDM Samrala Baldev Singh and stated that they have un-earthed a factory making spurious fertilisers at Sultanpur village falls in police station, Samrala.

Students donate for tsunami-hit
Mandi Gobindgarh, January 16
Staff and students of Gobindgarh Public School and members of the Gobindgarh Educational and Social Welfare Trust have donated Rs 72,126 through The Tribune for the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. The staff donated one day’s salary, while the students contributed Rs 48,517.

‘Drop-out rate has come down’
Ludhiana, January 16
Drop-out rate has come down from 48 per cent to 34 per cent after the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) came into force in 2001. This was stated by Ms Kumud Bansal from Ministry of Human Resources. She was in the city to attend the Annual Prize Distribution Function of DAV Public School

Indoor stadium is a shambles
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 16
An indoor stadium here built with a grant of Rs 25 lakh is a shambles as it has not been handed over to any of the local agencies. The condition of the stadium, that had started degrading during its construction, has now become pitiable. Almost all fixtures, including window grilles, exhaust fans, floodlights, chairs and bathroom fittings, have been removed. In the absence of window grilles the stadium hall is easily accessible to birds, dogs and miscreants.

Malwa sports festival from January 21
Samrala, January 16
The 11th annual three-day Malwa sports festival here dedicated to martyrdom of Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Gujri Ji will be held at Malwa College, Bondli, Samrala stadium from January 21 to January 23,. Besides Kabaddi academy matches, Kabaddi one village open, Kabaddi show matches (men/women), bullock cart races, dog races, weight lifting, athletics and cycle races will be the attractions. Prices in cash and kind will be given to winners.

Ensure proper utilisation of funds, DC tells officials

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, has directed officers of the different executing departments to ensure timely and proper utilisation of funds released for the development projects and to ensure quality work so that the people could get maximum benefit from the government grants. He said he would inspect the ongoing and completed projects during the field visits every month.
