Port Blair airstrip repaired
590 passengers evacuated

The airstrip at the Port Blair airport has been made operational following repairs. The Indian Airline today operated five flights to the worst affected region in India and evacuated over 590 passengers stranded there.

A statement issued by the Indian Airlines said while the General Manager (Commercial), Eastern Region, had stationed himself at Part Blair along with his team, the public sector domestic airlines were planning to operate seven flights from the island tomorrow.

A total of 593 passengers were evacuated on the five flights, three of which were operated from Kolkata and two from Chennai.

The Indian Airlines has, as of now, planned four relief flights for December 29, two of which would be operated from Kolkata and two from Chennai.

But these would depend on the number of passengers, who still needed to be evacuated from the island.

The cracks on the airstrip at Port Blair was repaired by the armed forces and made operational for all aircrafts except the Airbus.

Incidentally, Port Blair went without electricity, fuel or water for the second day today and more importantly the entire food stocks in Car Nicobar have been also swept away by the water, reports reaching here said.

The Indian Airlines has also set up special cells in Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi for the help of the people whose relatives are stranded at the islands.
