On road to run 550 km in 150 hours

When you run 550 km within 150 hours it is a rare feat by any standard. Arun Kumar Bhardwaj, an employee of the Planning Commission, New Delhi, is all set to perform this feat and enter the Limca Book of Records by running from Delhi to Chandigarh and back.

Thieves break into Sector 34 bank, fail to rob

Thieves broke into the State Bank of India branch in Sector 34 here on Thursday night, but failed to take away anything. They entered after breaking a window pane and a grill of a toilet.

Over 50 Class IV employees of the Municipal Council here are working as house help and drivers in the houses of Punjab Government officers and ministers. These employees, all of whom are safai karamcharis, are on the rolls of the council and are being paid their monthly salary by the council even as they continue to serve the VIPs.

Cop held for cheating widow
Chandigarh, November 27
The Punjab Police has arrested Head Constable Sukhwinder Singh alias Bittu, accused of enacting a drama of marriage to usurp the money of a widow. He was sent to two days’ police remand by a Patiala court today. The police has not arrested the other two co-accused and brothers of Sukhwinder Singh, alleged Sheela Rani, the complainant.

Tent city for devotees at Chamkaur Sahib
Mohali, November 27
A temporary tent city, spread over an area of 50 acres will be established at Chamkaur Sahib to accommodate at least 8,000 persons who are expected to visit Chamkaur Sahib on the occasion of the 300 years of the martyrdom of Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jhujhar Singh, sons of the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh.

2-hr jam on Kalka highway
Zirakpur, November 27
Thousands of motorists were stranded in a traffic jam on the Zirakpur-Bhankharpur stretch of the Kalka-Ambala highway for over two hours this evening. Police presence during the jam was inadequate, putting the motorists to hardship. Drivers not following traffic rules also added to the situation.

Corridors cleared, re-taken in a few hours

The Municipal Corporation removed encroachments from the corridors of Sector 22 and Shastri Market here today. However, by the evening all encroachments were back in place, the impact of the drive having lasted only a few hours.

Accident victim cop dies in PGI

Thoru Ram (52), an ASI in Chandigarh police, succumbed to injuries this morning in the PGI. He had been admitted to the hospital after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on November 21.

Man held for stealing scooter
Mohali, November 27
The police here has arrested one person on the charge of stealing a scooter. The accused Rajinder Singh, a resident of Nehru Colony, was arrested today and the stolen scooter recovered from him.

1 killed, 2 hurt in road mishap
Zirakpur, November 27
Yogesh Kumar (23) was killed and Anal Chauhan (19) and Bittu (21) sustained serious injuries when a jeep in which they were travelling rammed into a tree along the Chandigarh-Ambala highway near Chandigarh barrier in wee hours on Saturday.

Beant case accused boycott court

Lakhwinder Singh and Shamsher Singh, two accused being tried for the conspiracy in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, today boycotted court proceedings in protest against the “maltreatment” and “hurting” of their religious sentiments by the Burail Jail authorities.
