Wedding vows add to traffic woes
New Delhi, November 27 With the police having assured “co-operation” and claiming to have made all arrangements to meet the rush of weddingwallas, the invitees’ are working on an itinerary that can take them to more than one wedding without having to spend most part of their time caught in an endless jam. Sunday being the day when most couples will be wedded in the hope of a happy and lasting union, not just are the banquet hall managers, florists and decorators at their wits end…Those having to subscribe to protocol are complaining as well. Asked to choose between ‘his side’ and ‘her side’ of the family could prove to be Herculean task. And then again, darting from a wedding in the posh and preferred Mehrauli to an equally big affair in the precincts of Electronic City Noida could mean participating in a hurdle race. Each major intersection proving to be an obstacle. “We have two cars, so half the family will attend a wedding in Dwarka and the rest will go to a wedding in Rajouri Garden. However, this still means declining at least two other invitations,” said a South Delhi-based banker. As if making it to the wedding is not a task in itself, reaching on time is another cause for concern. More so with the priests, who owing to their pivotal role in the weddings, are in great demand. It was pointed out that on an average, each priest, who has been engaged to conduct a wedding, has to solemnise at least two more on the same day. Despite being pressed to provide “their best” at each wedding, florists, music bands and even the horse carriage providers are smiling their way to the bank. Fourteen thousand weddings have translated into an “obscene amount of money” if one were to just run their eyes over the finance sheets. While everyone seems to have managed a sumptuous piece for themselves from this huge wedding pie, the wedding planners are raking in the maximum, what with ‘Mr and Mrs Money bags’ having paid for that “different” set up. From decorating the place with exotic orchid and tempting the guests with mouth-watering specialities from across the world, they have also earned from instructing the hosts on how to “wrap presents”. And if anyone were left wondering why November the 28, the explanation being offered is that the day is the most auspicious day for marriages and engagements as the Sun and Jupiter are on ‘uttarayan’. And if anyone was left wondering why Sunday, November the 28, the explanation being offered is that the day is the most auspicious day for marriages and engagements as the Sun and Jupiter are on

Mathura Road’s gain is Ring Road’s loss
New Delhi, November 27 This happened because drivers diverted their vehicles to the Ring Road to avoid the Mathura road near the Trade Fair venue. According to the police officials, “Owing to the extensive publicity in the newspapers, the commuters opted for the Outer Ring Road area, leaving the inner roads free. Result: the traffic on Mathura Road near the Trade Fair was easier to negotiate than on most days in the year. However, the traffic police were nonplussed when it came to maintaining traffic on the ring roads. Thousands of vehicles could be seen proceeding at a snail’s pace from Nizamuddin Bridge to ITO bridge. On the other hand, the police had made adequate arrangements with the help of the Women Cell of Delhi Police to check petty crime in the trade fair. A number of college girls were also deployed in plainclothes. The police sources said that they had registered more than 300 cases since November 14 during the Trade Fair. The DCP, New Delhi, Ms Anita Roy, said that today they had registered 34 cases under different sections of IPC.

18 lakh devotees take dip in Ganga
Ghaziabad, November 27 Though there were poor arrangements, especially of lighting and drinking water, the fair passed off peacefully on the whole. According to official sources, a total of 18 lakh devotees, including those from UP and other states took a dip in the Ganga. The devotees also took part in a number of other religious ceremonies for the peace of their ancestors. Though cleanliness was better on the entire Braj Ghat, clean drinking water was not available. The visitors had to drink the polluted water supplied by the Municipal Corporation. Another irritant was the lack of adequate lighting in the area, especially on the bathing ghats. Hundreds of devotees had strayed into deeper water for want of proper barricading. Volunteers and divers rescued them. All the arrangements made by the authorities for the Kartik Mela went awry, especially on the Isnan Path. The unorganised mass of people wanting transport for the return journey resulted in traffic jams. The policemen on duty simply appeared helpless. Many of them looked the other way with the hapless people left to fend for themselves. |
Chautala on whirlwind tour as polls near
Faridabad, November 27 The Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala’s one-day tour of the district tomorrow may be one of the most hectic in the past five years, as he will be presiding over at least 10 different functions in just seven hours. Perhaps for the first time, he will be chairing three ‘Sarkar Apke Dwar’ programmes, in a single day in the district during this tour. According to the district authorities, the Chief Minister will reach
Hathin, a small sub-divisional town in the Mewat region at around 10 am on Sunday to hear the grievances of this Assembly segment. It will be the first such programme for this segment under the fifth phase of the ‘Sarkar Apke Dwar’ programme, launched this year. Ironically, it is claimed that several of the schemes, announced earlier in such programmes, were still to be completed, while the supporters and workers of the ruling INLD party claim that the majority of the works had been either completed or were nearing completion. At about 12 noon, the Chief Minister will be laying the foundation stone of a residential sector to be developed by the Haryana Urban Development Authority at Bahin village in the district. The third function will be held at the same village where he will be inaugurating a veterinary hospital, built at a cost of Rs 21 lakh. It is claimed that the residents of about 15 villages will be benefited by this facility. |
Newborn girl abandoned in hospital
Noida, November 27 According to a hospital staff, it had been left at about 11 pm two days ago. The baby was brought in, tended properly and then a search was launched for the missing mother. The hospital doctors and staff just do not know how to handle the case. Meanwhile, some people queued up to adopt the child who has been given to an attendant, Sharda. The hospital authorities have informed the police station in Sector-20. The two baby girls, abandoned earlier, are still in the hospital in the care of ward boy Ravinder and his wife Madhu while the second girl is being looked after by staff nurse Urmilla. According to CMO, Dr A.K. Sharma, people forsake unwanted newborn children in the hospital, finding it a safe haven. These kids are mostly born out of wedlock, he added. So far six newborn children have been abandoned in the government hospital, Noida. In 1994, a child was adopted by a policeman. In 2001, two children were adopted by a staff nurse and a person known to the hospital staff. Those left this month have been given in the charge of a ward boy Ravinder, staff nurse Urmila and the hospital attendant Sharda.

Some criminals on a motorcycle sped away after shooting at a woman in Khora Colony in a broad daylight. The incident took place near a police post. Ms Manju, 27, wounded in her hip was rushed to a hospital. Police have reportedly recovered an empty cartridge from the spot. As Manju along with another woman was passing in front of a police post, two youths on the bike fired at her. Some eyewitnesses tried to note down the number of the bike, but full number was not written on the numberplate. The assailants fled towards Mayur Vihar. Some people feel that Maju was hit accidentally; the assailants’ target was someone else, perhaps a policeman. The police are investigating the matter.—OC

New treatment to eliminate joint
New Delhi, November 27 However, what many are unaware is that it could be an injury to the delicate surface of the joints, which are medically referred to as chondral injuries. Left untreated, they rarely improve and cause further discomfort, increased disability and eventually permanent damage to the joint, a condition for which we have a familiar name-arthritis. Until recently, there was hardly any treatment available to deal with such problems, either medically or surgically. A team led by Dr Raju Vaishya-Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, has introduced a revolutionary technique called Autologus Cartilage Implantation (ACI) to treat these injuries. ACI is a tissue engineering approach for the treatment of articular (Joint) cartilage defects. It involves collection of chondrocyte cells from the patient’s joint through a keyhole surgery and then multiplying them in a sterile culture laboratory. With time, the regenerated cartilage displays a similar physiology and load bearing capacity to that of normal cartilage, and thus avoids the need for total joint replacement. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vaishya said, “It gives us great pleasure to bring this revolutionary new technology to India, which will not only provide a reliable treatment method for joint injuries, but it will also eliminate the need for expensive and complex options like joint replacement surgeries. We are also very happy for the presence of Dr Henderson, who is one of the pioneers of this technology.” |
Criminals make a killing as cops
Greater Noida, November 27 Most of the police personnel, including circle officers (COs–DSPs) and staff officers in charge of police stations, hitherto used to remote control from Ghaziabad, were found absent from their stations. The new SSP who believes in surprise checks, himself had a surprise in store this time as he could not find any information about the whereabouts of COs of Greater Noida, Dadri, Javers and staff officers in charge of several police stations. The SSP began his inspection trip at 12.30 am and went to Kasna police station where the SO had gone AWOL. “He is sick and sleeping,” his colleagues told the police chief. The chief then ordered the cops to check as to who among the SOs of
Kakode, Rabupura, Javer and Jahangirpur police stations and COs of Greater Noida, Dadri and Javer were on night patrol duty. He could not get any information about them. At Surajpur police station, the SSP was told that the SO was on night patrol. He then went to Surajpur police control room, but could not find clue to the whereabouts of COs. The police chief became quite angry and gave an earful to the persons present. He told them to get their act together and improve the law and order situation in the district. In the aftermath of his inspection tour, some heads are expected to roll. |
Cops stall cremation, retrieve body
New Delhi, November 27 According to the police, the victim, Usha, wife of Dinesh, allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained here last night, when a bullet fired during wedding festivities at the Preet Vihar Community Center hit her. While no formal complaint has been lodged with the police, an anonymous caller informed the cops at nine am today about the mishap. The police then stalled the cremation and recovered the partially burnt body of the woman from Nigambodh Ghat; they have taken it into custody for the post-mortem examination. The police said that the post-mortem, which is likely to be conducted in the next 48 hours, would help ascertain whether the woman actually died of a bullet injury. A complaint has been lodged in the Preet Vihar Police Station and investigations are on to ascertain whether the deceased woman was related to the family of Om Prakash Gupta, who were hosting the wedding. |

INLD to gherao Parliament
Gurgaon, November 27 Mr Narender
Rathee, a functionary of the youth wing of the Haryana unit of the INLD, said that the rise in prices was due to the faulty polices of the Congress-led United Democratic Alliance
(UDA) at the Centre. Mr Rathee objected to the remarks of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) leaders against the rise in prices during the NDA regime. Dwelling on the organisation front, he said that units of the INLD student wing will be set up in all the colleges of the state by December 2. He pooh-poohed the reports of anti-incumbency factor against the INLD government. The dynamics of assembly elections are different from those of parliamentary elections,

Demand for change in
EMU timings
The Dainik Yatri Sangh (DYS), an association of daily railway passengers, today demanded the change in timing of the EMU running between Delhi and Aligarh
via Ghaziabad. In a letter to the Northern Railway, the DYS has demanded that the departure time for the EMU from the Delhi Railway Station be changed from 1.20 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. The daily commuter have reasoned that the present timing has been found to cause inconvenience to the office goers as well as to the large number of students who travel to the national Capital for education. The Secretary of the DYS, Mr M. S. Dubey ‘Bijnori’, has alleged that instead of helping the commuters, the Northern Railway has been changing the train timings without considering its adverse impact on the daily
commuters. |
