Naxals kill 17 cops in UP

Varanasi, November 20
Suspected naxalites today outnumberd a police party killing 17 constables and wounding several others in the neighbouring Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh.

The naxalites, said to be numbering 150, laid an ambush for a truck carrying an unspecified number of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) jawans on combing duty this morning and blew up the “narkati” culvert, the police said.

The dead included 13 PAC jawans and four constables, the police said, adding that the injured had been rushed to a hospital here.

The naxalites were waiting for the 36th PAC battalion truck which was scheduled to pass over the culvert, sources said, adding that they later escaped with their weapons.

Commissioner C.N. Dubey, IG range, Devraj Nagar, and other senior officials reached the spot and an extensive combing operation has been launched in the Naugarh forests to nab the culprits, the police said. — PTI
