Row over Sir Chhotu Ram’s belongings
Hisar, November 20 INLD general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Ajay Chautala remarked that politicising the issue was ‘unfortunate and showed cheap mentality of the Congress’. He stated this at Bithmara village, nearly 60 km from here, where he reached today with belongings of Sir Chhotu Ram. He was leading the yatra, which entered the first village of the district. Targeting Congress leader Virender Singh, he said those who claimed to be the descendants of Chhotu Ram had not taken the initiative in that regard. Sir Chhotu Ram’s belongings could be brought from Pakistan only due to the efforts by Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, he claimed. On the other hand, Congress MP from Hisar Jai Prakash said the INLD was trying to draw political mileage out the issue. Coming down heavily on the Chautala regime, he said now, when Devi Lal’s name had failed to draw crowds, the Chief Minister thought of Sir Chhotu Ram. Mr Jai Prakash said Devi Lal had once shown black flags to Sir Chhotu Ram. He said during his long tenure, Mr Chautala had not remembered Sir Chhotu Ram even once. He said several farmers had been brutally shot during the INLD rule and the Chief Minister was now remembering the great farmer leader. The Congress MP said a party delegation, led by Mr Virender Singh, would soon go to Pakistan to confirm whether the belongings brought to India were genuine or not. He said Mr Chautala had been urged to include Mr Virender Singh, a grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram, in the delegation to Pakistan, but he refused to do so. This showed the mindset of the Chief Minister, he added. |
Feud among Tau’s descendants hots up
Chandigarh, November 20 Hostility among Mr Devi Lal’s sons for the political pie left by their father is well known. Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Haryana Chief Minister, has already introduced his two sons to politics, one of whom is an MP and the other an MLA. Mr Ravi Chautala, another grandson of Mr Devi Lal, is also preparing himself to cash in on his grandfather’s legacy when the Assembly elections are held early next year. Talking to TNS from his Dabwali residence over phone, 34-year-old Ravi, a member of the Congress, said he was interested in contesting from Rori Assembly constituency. He, however, added that it was up to the party
high command to decide whether he should be given the ticket or not. What has cast a shadow over Ravi’s chance of getting ticket from Rori is the reported move by Mr Ranjit Singh to return to the Congress. Mr Ranjit Singh is another son of Mr Devi Lal and he is Ravi’s uncle. Ranjit had been a member of the Congress for quite a while. However, he left the Congress and joined the BJP before the last Lok Sabha poll. Mr Ravi Chautala, too, wanted to join the BJP at that time but his entry to the saffron party was allegedly prevented by Mr Ranjit Singh, who apparently wanted to enjoy the advantage of being the only member of the Devi Lal family in the BJP. Ravi joined the Congress soon after the Lok Sabha elections in which the Congress won nine out 10 Haryana seats. It was Ms Selja, Union Minister and MP from Haryana, who helped Ravi to get the Congress membership. Mr Ranjit Singh also resigned from the BJP but he is still not able to find his way back to his old party. Asked whether he would now try to spoil Mr Ranjit Singh’s chance of joining the Congress, Ravi’s reply was that it was not in his power to prevent his uncle’s induction in the Congress. He, however, claimed that the Sirsa district unit of the Congress was against Mr Ranjit Singh’s entry in the
Congress. Ravi’s other uncle, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has not been kind to him either. Twelve cases, including attempt to murder and car theft and robbery have been slapped on him by the Haryana Police during the past four years. He also spent 24 days in prison in 2002 after being arrested by the state police. |
Contempt notice issued to khap panchayat
Chandigarh, November 20 Taking up a petition filed by the couple, stating therein that despite court orders directing the panchayat not to interfere with their marital status, the panchayat told them that they could only live in the fields outside the village and not in their houses. Claiming that the action of the panchayat, coming after the court order, is a clear case of willful contempt of court, the petitioners have sought appropriate action against the erring panchayat members. It may be recalled that sometime back, the High Court had directed the panchayat not to interfere in the lives of the couple. The court had also asked the District Administration and the police chief as to what action had been taken by them to deal with the situation. The petitioners, including the People’s Union for Civil Liberty, Panchkula, had questioned the authority of the panchayat to give such a directive. The couple had also alleged that the order was passed on the asking of Sarpanch Pushpa Devi, who had a grouse against Mr Ashish Dagar. The couple also has a four-year-old child. Today, the Bench of Chief Justice Mr Justice B.K. Roy and Mr Justice Surya Kant issued notice to the khap panchayat chief for November 23, asking him to explain why contempt of court proceedings not be initiated against him. Meanwhile, another such couple, Ms Sonia and Mr Rampal, has also filed an application in the High Court, seeking action against the members of the khap panchayat of a Jhajjar village for having caused a lot of harassment and mental torture to Ms Sonia. Saying that pregnant Ms Sonia had to be admitted to the PGI, Rohtak, due to the agony caused by the illegal actions of the khap panchayat, the petitioners have prayed that appropriate action under law be initiated against them. The application is likely to be taken up for hearing soon. |
CM lays foundation stone of jail building
Rewari, November 20 The jail, which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 18.26 crore, will be part of the district police complex to be developed on a piece of land measuring 50 acres. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the word ‘jail’ was purposely changed to “Sudharghar” (reformatory) by late Devi Lal, who wanted these reformatories to mould young criminals into good citizens through specialised mental, moral and physical training, besides providing multifarious employment avenues to jobless youths. He said his government, had brought thousands of such youths into the mainstream of national life during the past five years. He said the new education, sports and industrial policies implemented by his government had played significant role in transforming youths who had gone astray. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of Gymkhana Club to be constructed by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore on 2.57 acre plot in Sector 4 here.
