INVITATION: Prof Ravinder Singh Sandhu, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, will chair a session on inequality, poverty and homelessness at an international conference on “Paths of urban change: social and spatical perspectives” to be held at Singapore from December 9 to 11.

MEMORIAL LECTURE: The Centre for Immigrant Studies of Guru Nanak Dev University will hold Dr Gopal Singh Puri Memorial Lecture on November 22 at the university campus. Mr Fakhar Zaman, noted Punjabi writer of Pakistan, will be the main speaker. Seth Tarlok Singh Chawla of Thailand will be the chief guest.

THEFT: Thieves decamped with Rs 53,000 in cash and 180 gm of gold from Krishna Nagar area on Thursday. Mr Satinder Goel had shifted to a house in Krishna Nagar a few days back. He went to attend a function at Mandi Gobindgarh at about 12 pm. When he came back, he found the door of the house broken and cash and gold in the house missing. A case has been registered.

Education Tour: Brig A.K. Pathak, Commander 2 ( Independent) Armoured Brigade, flagged off an education tour to Delhi, Ahmednagar, Bangalore and Mysore for 30 schoolchildren of remote areas of Kathua district in JK here on Thursday. The excursion is part of the ongoing Operation Sadbhavna.

MAN GETS LIFE TERM: The Sessions Judge, Gurdaspur, has sentenced Ashok Kumar, a resident of Amritsar, to life term and also fined him Rs 5,000 for the murder of Satish Kumar Gop, a local resident. In case of default of fine, he will have to further undergo RI for six months.

POLICE REMAND: The local police on Thursday arrested Navin Kumar, a local resident, allegedly involved in distribution of obscene photos of a former student of a local college. The police has already arrested one person in this case. The accused was produced before Mr Raj Kumar Garg, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) here, who remanded him to police custody till Saturday.

Condolence meeting: A condolence meeting of members of the Samrala Press Club, on the death of Bachan Kaur (92), mother of Sukhdev Singh Patwari, a former Punjabi Tribune reporter and now Chief Editor of an evening daily Janata Express, was held at the Civil Rest House here under the chairmanship of Ram Gopal Sofat. Two-minute silence was also observed at this occasion.
