China helped handle flood scare: Army
Tribune News Service

Jammu, October 20
The Indian Army today thanked China for providing timely information about the recent ParChu river blockade scare that posed a flood threat in many areas of Himachal Pradesh.

Brig Deepak Khurana, leader of the nine-member Indian team of Army officers, who were interacting with a delegation of the Chinese army at Chushul in Ladakh, expressed hope that such cooperation and contact in all fields, including military sphere, would further strengthen bonds of friendship between the two forces. The machanism of meetings between border forces personnel proved fruitful in the successful handling of the panic situation.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Indian side in maintaining peace and tranquillity along the line of actual control.

Brigadier Khurana emphasised the efforts put in by the two governments to improve good neighbourly and friendly relations between the two countries and their armies.

Such meetings between officers of the two armies had played a significant role in resolving differences at the local levels. These had been instrumental in promoting and strengthening friendship, mutual trust and confidence.

These meetings are organised regularly at Chushul in Ladakh, Nathula in Sikkim and Bumla in Arunachal Pradesh. These are organised four times in a year. While the Chinese army organises meetings in January and June, the Indian side holds meetings on August 15 and October 20. Two of these meetings are formal and two are held to celebrate the Chinese New Year in January and the Indian Independence Day on August 15.

Jammu, October 20
Mr M.K. Talashi, who had been driven out of his home in Kashmir valley due to terrorism, is struggling for life. His both kidneys have been damaged. Doctors have recommended to undergo a renal transplant as one of his kidneys was badly damaged.

Mr Talashi said (52) had gone to AIIMS, New Delhi, after being referred by doctors here. He, however, returned without getting the treatment because of the cost involved in the transplant.

The doctors here had diagnosed that he was suffering from adult polycystic kidney disease that was detected in 1996.

Mr Talashi his 25-year-old son had offered to donate his kidney, but he was unable to undergo the surgery because of the post-operative expenditure involved in the process.

He said after migrating here in 1990 from Wullarhama in Anantnag district he had invested all his savings and the money realised by disposing of his property in constructing a house in Sharda Colony on the Akhnoor road. He was working as a Supervisor in the Irrigation Department at Anantnag before migrating here.

Mr Talashi is now a broken man and spends most of his time in his home.
