Biocon ties up with Nobex for oral insulin
Bangalore, October 20 Announcing the partnership today here, Biocon chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said the move was a part of the “global insulin strategy.” Everything from profits to development and marketing costs would be shared, she said, but declined to divulge “commercially sensitive” details. Most of the research would be carried out in India, while some work that cannot be done here like animal modelling would be done at Nobex, she said. The agreement also provides for Biocon to invest in Nobex equity. Dr Christopher Price, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nobex, said today insulin had to be taken only through injections. If oral insulin was available, apart from obvious advantages like ease of taking and greater patient compliance, it would be a medically superior option as it reproduces the delivery route that natural insulin from the pancreas takes in normal, healthy subjects. “Additional advantages of convenience include easy portability with no refrigeration requirements.” The current market for injectible insulin is worth about $ 5 billion. By 2030, the world diabetic population is expected to cross 200 million. In India alone, there are an estimated 30 million diabetics today, a number expected to double in a similar time line. Though attempts had been made to develop such a product before, this would be the first time that a technology base is married to a production base, he said. While Biocon has proven peptide production capabilities, the 10-year-old Nobex possesses proprietary peptide oral-delivery technology. Biocon today reported its net profit at Rs 105 crore for the half-year ended September 30, 2004, a rise of 75 per cent from Rs 60 crore posted during the corresponding period of last fiscal. The operating profit at Rs 122 crore was higher by 40 per cent from Rs 87 crore reported between April-September last year, the company said in a statement here. Sales grew by 40 per cent to Rs 360 crore and the total income by 42 per cent to Rs 367 crore from Rs 258 crore, it said. Revenues from biopharmaceuticals business increased by 38 per cent to Rs 287 crore from Rs 208 crore, contributing 78 per cent of the total income in H1 of fiscal 2005. The company said its revenue growth was spearheaded by strong performance in the US and European markets with exports growing 48 per cent, contributing 65 per cent to the overall revenues.
