Protest against lathi charge

Plans afoot for celebrating Mohan Singh’s centenary
Ludhiana, October 18
“Plans are afoot to celebrate the centenary of Punjabi literary doyen Prof Mohan Singh in different parts of Punjab,” said Jagdev Singh Jassowal, chairperson of Prof Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation, at a press conference held here today at Basant Resorts.

Beggars chase residents everywhere
Ludhiana, October 18
Last couple of years have seen a substantial increase in the number of beggars here. While some of them move from place to place, others stand at the traffic crossings. Hundreds of beggars can be seen at the busy crossings. Some even resort to wiping off the wind shields of vehicles to justify their claim for alms.

PAU student gets award
Ludhiana, October 18
The M. Tech thesis of Manpreet Singh, a research fellow in the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, PAU, has been adjudged the best by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). The award comes for his work on the design and development of straw push-through assembly for a no-till drill.

Missing man found dead
Amloh, October 18
The body of Baljit Singh (49) of Manngarh village 1 km from here, was found hanging from a tree near the village cremation ground today. Mr Karam Singh, member of the panchayat and younger brother of the deceased, asserted that Baljit had been missing since Sunday.

BSNL executives’ protest

Doctor booked in fraud case
Sahnewal, October 18 A doctor of Bhaini Sahib village has been booked by the Sahnewal police for allegedly duping a Mohali resident of Rs. 54,000. According to Paramjit Singh, Dr Sukhdev Singh took Rs 72,000 from him for sending him to Malaysia. He said instead of sending him to Malaysia the doctor sent him to Thailand and tried to pacify him by returning Rs 18,000.

Quiz, plenary session mark DMCH conference
Ludhiana, October 18
The annual conference of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (north zone) concluded at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) yesterday. The conference was organised under the aegis of the department of Community Medicine, DMCH, headed by Dr G.P.I. Singh, who is also the president of the association.

Declamation contest
Ludhiana, October 18
The Giani Harjit Singh Memorial Declamation Contest was organised at GGN Public School, here yesterday. The function was presided over by Dr Inderpal Singh, former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University. Fortyfive speakers from 23 CBSE-affiliated schools participated in the contest.

KVM celebrates founder’s day

KVM celebrated founder’s day today with a cultural show. Mr Anurag Verma Deputy Commissioner, who was the chief guest, presided over the function. The Principal, Mr S.C. Saxena, read out the school annual report.

Child healthcare week from Nov 14
Ludhiana, October 18
The Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Ludhiana chapter, will celebrate IAP Child Health Care Week from November 14. Dr Rajinder Gulati, president of the branch, said main stress would be on health education activities. A healthy baby contest would be held on Children’s Day along with inter-school group dance competition at Lions Bhawan.

BVM School athletes, judokas dominate
Ludhiana, October 18
In the 17th Punjab State Inter-Schools Athletics and Judo Championship organised by the Sarvhitkari Educational Society at Dhuri in Sangrur district from October 8 to 10, the local Bharitya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, proved its supremacy by clinching as many as 54 medals, including 31 gold, besides the overall championship trophy in athletics.
