Justice Kabir to be CJ of Punjab and Haryana HC

Justice Altamas Kabir of the Kolkata High Court has been appointed the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He will take over his new assignment shortly.

Justice Kabir is the nephew of Prof Humayun Kabir and the son of late Jahangir Kabir, a minister in the West Bengal Government during Dr B.C. Roy’s chief ministership and later Mr Prafulla Chandra Sen’s Ministry.

Talking to The Tribune on the phone this evening, Justice Kabir admitted he had received a communication from the Chief Justice of India a few days back about his appointment as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

An outstanding lawyer, Justice Kabir was born on July 19,1948, and had his education first in Kolkata Boys School and then Presidency College. He graduated from Presidency College with Honours in History and then passed MA from Kolkata University in History. Subsequently he obtained the law degree from the same university and enrolled himself as an advocate in Kolkata High Court in 1973.

Justice Kabir practiced in different district courts in the state as well as Kolkata High Court and the Supreme Court before his appointment as Judge of the Kolkata High Court on August 6, 1990.
