20 pc polling in PU graduate constituency
Chandigarh, September 19
It was an unusually low voter turnout in today’s election to the 15 seats of the graduate constituency of the Panjab University Senate. Recording a polling percentage of 20 per cent, the poll passed off peacefully, though the indifference of the voters came as a big disappointment to the 35 candidates in fray for the seats.

Industrialist kidnapped, murdered
Panchkula, September 19
A 34-year-old industrialist was kidnapped and later murdered by his friend and business partner at the latter’s factory in Industrial Area here yesterday. The accused had demanded Rs 25 lakh ransom from the victim’s family.

   Dr  G.C. Pande The Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS), Shimla, is in for a makeover. The Chairman of the IIAS, Dr G.C. Pande, feels the "miscellaneous character" of the institute with regard to studies is inhibiting its expansion and limiting its scope to the narrow confines of research without any substantial contribution to society.

An NRI telecom expert has warned that if large wireline operators like the BSNL in India have to survive, they will have to offer services comparable to those being offered by the wireless operators.

Minority status for sehajdhari Sikhs sought
Mohali, September 19
Members of the Sehajdhari Sikh Federation (SSF) have demanded that they be declared a minority community by the Government of India. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the president of the SSF said since the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee had thrown the sehajdhari Sikhs out of its fold by denying them the right to vote in the SGPC elections, they had no option but demand a separate minority status.

Tanuklaldas Baba Jatadhari shows his 10-foot-long hair during a visit to Pracheen Shiv Mandir, Sector 9, Panchkula. The 90-year- old mystic, who hails from Loki village in Bihar, says that he never had a hair cut, as he was dedicated to the Lord by his parents when he was a toddler. The mystic is as much in demand at Shiv Mandir here for his bhajans, as for devotees wanting to see him let down his long hair.

Domestic help dies of poisoning

A 30-year-old domestic servant died under mysterious circumstances at the PGI yesterday. According to the police, the victim, Kunwar Singh, was working in Phase VII with a family and was taken to the hospital by the owners when he was found in a semi-conscious state day before yesterday.

Free health check-up camp
Panchkula, September 19
Over 400 children attended a free health check-up camp conducted for schoolchildren at Doon Public School, Panchkula. Medicines free of cost were also distributed on the occasion. According to Colonel Anand, Principal of the school, “Fitness of body and mind is one of the prime objectives of the school.”

Staff shortage hits MC functioning

Over 60 posts in the Municipal Council here have been lying vacant for the past two years. Though the state Finance Department had sanctioned these posts two years ago, the delay in filling of these posts is affecting the work of the council, which controls over 80 per cent of the town and 13 villages.
