Mufti tells militants to shun violence Srinagar, June 4 Addressing a largely attended public meeting after inaugurating a bailey bridge at Zawoora, Shopian, in Pulwama district today, the Chief Minister recalled his recent meeting with the Central leaders, including Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Home Minister, Shivraj Patil and the chairperson of the UPA, Ms Sonia Gandhi. He added that the Central government was very positive about the normalisation process with Pakistan and in taking forward the dialogue process in this trouble-torn state. He said the Centre had retained N.N. Vohra as interlocutor on Kashmir for the continuity of the dialogue process with Kashmiri groups. Referring to the approach of his government towards the separatists, the Mufti said leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Sheikh Abdul Aziz had been set free even though they had campaigned for the boycott of elections. Despite the boycott campaign, the people had come out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. India and Pakistan having decided to carry forward the peace process and the Centre engaged in dialogue with Kashmiri groups, the militants had no reason to continue with violence, he added. The public meeting was organised after the inauguration of the bailey bridge over Rambiara river, jointly constructed by the public works department and the Army under the Sadhbhavna project. Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, was also present on the occasion. The two agencies have already constructed two bridges over Lidder river in Anantnag district at Sakhras and Yannar. In his address on the occasion, Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad assured the Army’s continued support to the Kashmiri people for promoting education, health facilities and women’s empowerment. This year the Sadhbhavna project would focus on the education of poor children and development of women. He asked the militants to shun the gun and join the mainstream. |
Army: fencing to be completed by month-end Shopian, June 4 “The fencing work along the border in the state will be completed by June 30”, the General Officer Commanding, Northern Command, Lt-Gen Hari Prasad, said at a function here. “Our battle is against militancy and we will make all-out efforts to wipe it out, but we want to rehabilitate the misled youth for whom we have started some schemes,” General Prasad said. As part of the efforts to increase cooperation between the Army and the local people, the Kashmiri youth recruited in the home and hearth battalions of the Territorial Army would be deployed in Kashmir only, he said. He said the Army wanted to contribute to the development of the state and would do everything within its means in this regard. This year the Army would concentrate on the welfare of children and women affected by militancy.
