Peacock succumbs to gunshot wound

Sundernagar, May 29
A peacock which was injured by a gunshot died here yesterday while it was being taken to the wildlife office by a resident of Keran village, near here.

The peacock was spotted by Arun Kumar on the roadside near the village.

A preliminary examination conducted by wildlife officials revealed that the bird had sustained gunshot wound. The left wing of the bird was damaged.

After receiving information about the incident, the DFO, wildlife, Kulu, visited the range office here, where the dead bird was kept, and examined it. Later, a post-mortem examination of the bird was conducted by a veterinary doctor. The carcass was burnt in the presence of the committee formed as per directions of the Forest Department.

On a complaint of the Range Officer, a case under Section 51 of Wildlife Protection Act was registered. a police party visited the spot yesterday along with wildlife officials. According to Mr C.L. Joshi, Range Officer, Wildlife, the peacock was found near the nature Awareness Centre, Trambri.
