Sriperumbudur (TN), May 21
Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was remembered on his 13 death anniversary today at the site where he was assassinated on May 21, 1991, when he came to address an election meeting.

Congress volunteers, led by TNCC Treasurer D Sudarsanam, placed wreaths at the Rajiv memorial, which was declared open by the President A P J Abdul Kalam on May 21 last year.

It was a low-key affair here with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi not visiting the site this year, as she was busy at New Delhi in the formation of the new government at the Centre.

Ms Sonia Gandhi, along with her children Priyanka and Rahul, had visited the site last year. An all-religion prayer was held and Congressmen took anti-terrorism pledge at the memorial.

Karnataka Minister for Medium Industry in the outgoing S M Krishna Cabinet, led 200 Congress volunteers, who brought Rajiv Jyothi from Bangalore.

Mr J.M. Haroon, newly elected Congress MP from Periyakulam and Assam Minister for Industries and Commerce, Bhubaneswar Kalita, inaugurated a medical camp, organised by the TNCC medical cell convener, Dr G. Abraham.

DAVP of the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry organised a photo exhibition of Rajiv Gandhi participating in functions when he was the Prime Minister.

Posters, congratulating Sonia Gandhi for renouncing the prime ministership and comparing her to Mahatma Gandhi were pasted all over the small town.

Meanwhile, the absence of top Congress leaders at the Rajiv memorial here today upset a large number of Congress workers, many of whom had come from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, to observe the death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.

A large number of Congress workers kept waiting till late afternoon with the hope that if not the Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi, then at least Ms Priyanka Vadhra or the newly elected Congress MP, Mr Rahul Gandhi, would pay a visit here.
