19 give slip to death
Ludhiana, May 21
Nineteen persons, including four girls, had a providential escape today after they were trapped atop Navrang Towers building when it caught fire around 10 am today. While the extent of damage is yet to be assessed, no loss of life has been reported. The apparent cause of the fire is said to be an electric short-circuit.

70-year-old woman murdered
Ludhiana, May 21
A 70-yr-old woman was allegedly murdered at Jagraon, near here, by an unidentified assailant at about 2.30 am today, who decamped with her earrings. The police was informed by some neighbours that some person had entered the house of Ranjit Kaur in Agwar Ladhai and attacked her with sharp-edged weapons.

Roads and lanes in the city are virtually wearing a deserted look. Business centres are facing subdued activity. Frequent power cuts have made the life of residents hell. And lack of rain has added to their woes. Mungbean workshop at PAU

The final workshop under the DFID-AVRDC mungbean project will be held from May 27 to 31 on the PAU campus. Scientists from the UK, the USA, the AVRDC, Taiwan, the ADB, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, the ICRISAT, the ICAR, New Delhi, the IIPR, Kanpur, and farmers from Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab will participate in the workshop.

Parthiv Patel focusing on batting
Ludhiana, May 21
To make a place in the Indian team for one-day internationals, Parthiv Patel has been concentrating on his batting. The Test wicketkeeper, brand ambassador of Avon Cycles, was in the city today. Talking to mediapersons after signing the contract, he said it was a plus point if a wicketkeeper was among the runs. About the tour to Pakistan Parthiv said he had gained a lot of experience during the series as he had faced world class pace bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami. He singled out the pitch at Multan while appreciating the arrangements made by the host country. Parthiv was highly appreciative of his senior players, who had encouraged him during the tour.
