Sonia, Manmohan visit Veer Bhumi New Delhi, May 21 A wreath was placed on behalf of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at Veer Bhumi, where Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her cabinet colleagues, J&K Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, Lok Jan Shakti party leader Ram Vilas Paswan, RPI leader Ramdas Athavale and many newly elected MPs, including film star Govinda, were among others who paid tributes to the departed leader. Dr Manmohan Singh, attending first formal function after being appointed as Prime Minister, was accompanied by wife Gursharan Kaur in paying tributes to the departed leader. At Anand Bhawan in Allahabad, the ancestral house of Nehrus’ and Gandhis’, a large number of Congress workers garlanded the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi. The Assam Government introduced a new scheme for the welfare of children from insurgency-affected families on the occasion. In Hyderabad, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajsekhar Reddy, PCC President D Srinivas and other senior leaders garlanded the statue of Rajiv Gandhi at the Punjagutta Square and paid tributes recalling his services to the nation. In Meghalaya state government employees pledged to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence. Congressmen across West Bengal vowed to work under the leadership of party President Sonia Gandhi. Tributes were paid to Rajiv Gandhi in Delhi Assembly where Speaker Ajay Maken administered a pledge to employees to fight against terrorism. — PTI |
