Station senior officers in key constituencies, Chandigarh, May 9 The Inspector-General, Haryana Armed Police, Madhuban, Mr V.N. Rai, has been stationed at Bhiwani to supervise the security arrangements in the constituency. Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, elder son of the Chief Minister, is facing a stiff challenge from Mr Surender Singh and Mr Kuldip Bishnoi, sons of former Chief Ministers Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal, respectively, there. Mr Alok Joshi, IGP, Ambala Range, has been stationed at Kurukshetra from where the younger son of the Chief Minister, Mr Abhey Singh Chautala, is locked in a stiff battle with Mr Navin Jindal of the Congress and Mr Gurdial Singh Saini of the BJP, besides Mr Jatinder Singh Khurdban of the HVP. Mr K.K. Sindhu, DIG, Vigilance, Gurgaon, has been stationed at Sonepat from where Mrs Krishna Malik, wife of the DGP (on leave), Mr M.S. Malik, is fighting a grim battle to snatch the seat from the sitting BJP MP, Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan. These orders came today amidst allegations by the Opposition that the ruling party had enrolled a large number of bogus voters in various constituencies. Meanwhile, the necessary arrangements have been made to enable over 1.22 crore electorate of Haryana to exercise the right to franchise tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the period of polling, the movement of all vehicles, including two-wheelers, would not be allowed. However, bicycles have been exempted from the ban. However, the vehicular traffic on the national highways would be allowed. Vehicles carrying serious patients would also be allowed to ply. To facilitate the movement of newspersons, the Chief Secretary, Mr A.N. Mathur, has issued instructions that the authority letters issued by the Election Commission to the media people to visit polling booths would be treated as valid passes to ply their vehicles in the state. Last-ditch attempt to woo voters Bhiwani, May 9 Mr Rambilas Sharma, the BJP candidate, has also spent considerable amount of money but it is not much as against members of the three Lal families. The candidates hired a large number of vehicles. Even as use of vehicles and supporters came to an end yesterday as per the Election Commission deadline on campaigning, the INLD candidate found a novel way to advertise his candidature. Advertisements claiming that Mr Ajay Chautala will win from Bhiwani and similar items were published in the local pullout of a popular Hindi daily in news format. The pages are designed in such a manner that readers may not immediately understand that it is actually an advertisement supplement. “It is attempt to mislead the people of Bhiwani”, a member of the Congress said. The BJP is trying to play the caste card to woo Brahmin voters who have a strong presence in the constituency. Today, Mr Dharambir Gaur, president of the Bharat Seva Shakti Sangh, a front outfit of the BJP, issued a scathing statement against Mr Iswar Chandra Sharma, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Brahman Samaj, for lending support to the Congress candidate. The INLD has, meanwhile, roped in Mr Basudev Sharma, a former Congress leader, in its fold and hopes to get the support of the Brahmins. The Jats, the backward classes and the Dalits also form a substantial chunk of voters in Bhiwani. However, it is the Brahmins, who are the second largest community after the Jats in Bhiwani, who are at the centre of the tug of war between the three main contenders. Though canvassing officially came to an end yesterday, the candidates are still making attempts to win over the voters by way of door to door canvassing. Mr Ajay Chautala spent the day visiting various villages of the Adampur constituency, considered to be a bastion of Mr Bhajan Lal, today. Mr Kuldeep Bishnoi is touring important centres of all nine assembly segments of the constituency while Mr Surinder Singh, is also canvassing door to door at Adampur. Mr Rambilas Sharma is visiting various villages of the Dadri assembly segment. |
