Sonia third front’s choice as PM, says Paswan
Our Correspondent

Panipat, May 7
“There is no confusion over the choice of the prime ministerial candidate in the third front. We will form the government at the Centre and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will become the next Prime Minister of India,” said former Cabinet Minister and President of the Lok Janshakti Party Ramvilas Paswan in an exclusive interview with this correspondent here today.

“There are leaders in the third front who are aspiring to become Prime Minister. But undoubtedly, Ms Gandhi is the leader of the alternative coalition as the Congress will get the maximum seats among the third front parties. Ms Gandhi is a suitable candidate for the Prime Minister’s post and I will support her,” added Mr Paswan who was here today to campaign for the Lok Janshakti candidate, Mr Surinder Singh Hooda.

Talking about results of exit poll surveys giving the NDA an edge, Mr Paswan said the Election Commission should ban exit polls. “How can anyone predict election results by questioning just a few people from among lakhs of voters? The latest exit poll results favouring the NDA were reported by the media under pressure from the BJP.”

Giving details about his party’s position, Mr Paswan said the Lok Janshakti party was contesting elections on 20 seats in Bihar, UP and Haryana. He hoped to win 13 seats. In Haryana, the party was not in a position to contest all seats. Therefore, the party withdrew its candidates from nine seats and decided to contest only in the Karnal constituency “where our candidate is strong enough to give a fight.”

Talking about his resignation from the NDA government, Mr Paswan said the BJP was responsible for the killings of Muslims during the Gujarat riots and it had failed to protect the minorities. Therefore, he was left with no alternative other than resigning from the government.

He said in the present scenario, only those having connections and money were getting jobs and opportunities in life while the poor had been deprived of the right of education and employment. There was a need to include the right to education and employment as a fundamental right so that everyone got an equal opportunity to progress in life.

Talking about the resignation of the Haryana Lok Janshakti president, Capt Shamsher Singh Malik, from the party yesterday, Mr Paswan said Mr Malik had resigned without discussing anything with the partymen. “I have formed a 21-member committee today and soon we will nominate the new president of the state unit of the party.”

Atal as nation’s son has more say than bahu: Mahajan
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, May 7
The General Secretary of the BJP, Mr Pramod Mahajan, has claimed that his party would easily gain majority in the Lok Sabha elections and none could stop Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee from once again becoming the Prime Minister.

Addressing a public meeting at the local Jawahar Colony of the NIT area here last night, in support of the party candidate, Mr Ram Chander Bainda, Mr Mahajan said while the Congress was leaderless, the INLD was a regional outfit, whose government had failed miserably on various fronts.

Ridiculing the claims of the leaders of the regional parties about the possibility of their role in the formation of the next government at the Centre, he said , now such leaders had started dreaming of leading the country. He claimed that parties like the INLD might not be able to win even a single seat in these elections and people should think twice before going for such parties, if they wanted to have a stable and strong government at the Centre.

Comparing the recent tour of Indian cricket team to Pakistan, Mr Mahajan said the runs made by Virender Sehwag in the three Test matches also indicate the seat tally of the BJP, the Congress and the parties like the INLD.

He said while the score of 309 scored by Sehwag at Multan was also the score of the BJP, he claimed that the Congress would be able to bag only 86 (scored in second match) and the INLD at zero (made by Sehwag in third match).

He said if Congress President Sonia Gandhi was

the ‘Bahu’ (daughter-in-law) of the country, Mr Vajpayee was the ‘son’ of the nation and in a traditional Indian family, a son had more say than a ‘bahu’.

He said while Ms Gandhi found it difficult even to speak in Hindi, Mr Vajpayee was one of the finest orator.

He claimed that there was a fight going on among the Congress and its allies for taking the post of the Prime Minister.

He said if people wanted to see Mr Vajpayee as the Prime Minister, then they must vote to elect Mr Bainda from here and added that it could be a coincidence or luck that whenever Mr Bainda was elected from here, Mr Vajpayee had become the Prime Minister.

Besides Mr Bainda, Mr Krishan Pal Gurjar, Mr Chander Bhatia (both MLAs) Mr Deep Bhatia, Mr Ravinder Tomar and Mr Kumher Singh were present on the occasion.

Cong leaders have no issue: BJP
Our Correspondent

Jhajjar, May 7
Mr Om Prakash Dhankar, national secretary of the BJP has said that the Haryana Congress leaders have no issues in this election to go to the people with and they are struggling for their existence in politics. He held that the Congress leaders had been trying to “deceive” the people.

Addressing a press conference here today, the BJP leader said, “The BJP, unlike the Congress, has an agenda on which we were seeking the mandate of the people.” He said the Congress in Haryana had many chief ministerial candidates, which defied comprehension. Mr Dhankar asked the people to also give their mandate on the issue of people of foreign origin holding high posts like that of the Prime Minister and the President. He said persons of Indian origin holding high posts in foreign countries were those whose ancestors had migrated to these countries and they got the citizenship by virtue of their birth.

Mr Dhankar held that this general election has been fought on the development and leadership issues which would strengthen the democratic values. “Earlier, emotional issues dominated the poll in India as the major national party, the Congress, would raise issues like Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy, deaths of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi etc.”

Netraheen Manch urged to desist from agitation
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 7
The Haryana unit of the National Federation of the Blind has criticised the Netraheen Jagriti Manch of the state for “politicising” its demands for vested interests.

In a statement issued here today, the general secretary of the federation, Prof Jage Ram, said the manch had been resorting to an agitational path to grind its own axe. The agitational approach of the manch, he said, was disturbing the peaceful atmosphere despite the fact that the state government had been implementing a number of programmes for the welfare of all sections of society in general and the disabled in particular. He urged the members of the manch to desist from the agitational approach and resolve its grievances through negotiations.
