Cong leader shot dead in Doda

Jammu, May 7
In a poll-related violence, terrorists shot dead a Congress leader, Mohammad Jameel, while he was campaigning in the Marwah block of Doda district today.

Reports said Jameel was taken unaware as the armed terrorists started firing at him. He succumbed to injuries while being shifted to a hospital.

He was the president of the Congress in the Marwah block in the Kishtwar tehsil.

Various terrorist outfits and separatists have given a call for the boycott of the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Polling for the Udhampur seat of which Doda district is a part is scheduled to be held on May 10.

Terrorists have been trying to disrupt the election process in the constituency by targeting candidates of various parties. The militants earlier exploded grenades in an election rally that was being addressed at Banihal by Mr Lal Singh, Health Minister and Congress candidate, and then indiscriminately fired at another rally of the National Conference candidate, Mr Khalid Najib Surawardhy, killing two persons in each of these attacks.

SRINAGAR: Militants hurled a hand grenade towards the house of a Congress leader Mohammad Shafi Banday at Shopian on Friday. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside causing injury to Fatema, Azrah and Nazia. The injured were hospitalised.

Militants hurled a hand grenade towards a convoy of the security force at the Pattan Chowk on the Srinagar-Baramula road this afternoon. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded near a shop, causing injuries to one person.

A report from Baramula said gunmen kidnapped Abdul Hamid Khan at Nowpora Sopore and shot him dead last night. Another person Mohammad Sadiq Bhat was abducted and later killed at Maratgam Handwara.

Security forces arrested two militants along with four grenades, one wireless set and 52 rounds of ammunition at Bandipora last night.

A BSF jawan Rajinder Prasad shot himself dead with his service weapon at sub Training Centre Humhama near new airport on Friday.

BANIHAL: In a bid to disrupt the fourth phase of polling on May 10 in sensitive Doda Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, top militants commanders have asked their cadres to trigger explosions and target politicians, poll workers and security personnel, according to intelligence intercepts.

Top commanders of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the Hizbul Mujahideen, the Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islam and the HMPPR have told their cadres to go for joint actions to disrupt rallies and poll in Doda, Udhampur and Kathua districts, defence sources said.

Anti-poll posters have also come up in Chatroo, Gandoh, Baleesa, Gool, Banihal and remote places in past few days, warning people to keep away from poll or face death.
