Emigration of ex-servicemen to Iraq suspended

New Delhi, May 7
The government has suspended grant of emigration clearance to ex-servicemen for deployment as security guard and other security-related duties in Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, official sources said today.

The suspension came after reports that more than 1,500 former soldiers had been sent to Iraq by private agencies for working in army camps of US and allied forces in that country despite the ban and in violation of the Emigration Act.

While the restrictions on the transportation of people to Iraq had been imposed over a year ago, the authorities also suspended emigration clearance to those intending to go to Jordan, Kuwait and the UAE for security-related jobs.

The government has launched investigations to find out the exact number of ex-servicemen, if any, transhipped to Iraq. — UNI
