7 of family killed in mishap

Sangrur, April 27
Eight persons, including seven members of a family from Chandigarh, were killed on the spot while three others were injured when their Qualis reportedly collided with a truck near Mehlan village, about 10 km from here, last night.

The Sunam police said the deceased had been identified as Inder Parkash, Ramesh Kumar, Suraj Bhan and Gurbakhsh, all brothers; Uttam Chand and Sushil Kumar, both sons of deceased Inder Parkash; Ashok Kumar, brother-in-law of Inder Parkash; and Surinder Kumar, the driver of the vehicle.

The injured persons were Shailender Kumar, son-in-law of deceased Inder Parkash and Vikas and Hem Lata, son and daughter of deceased Ashok Kumar. The injured persons have been sent to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

The police said the family members were returning from Maur Mandi to Chandigarh after performing “shagun” ceremony in connection with the marriage of Inder Parkash’s daughter.

The post-mortem examination of the bodies was conducted by Dr R.S. Singla, SMO, Dr Parminder and Dr Rakesh Jain at the Civil Hospital, Sunam, today. Later, the bodies were handed over to the police by the hospital authorities.

The driver of the truck fled the scene. The police has registered a case under Sections 304-A, 279, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC against the truck driver.
