Colombo, April 3
President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s newly formed United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has taken an early lead in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections, votes for which are being counted today.
According to the results released so far for the three districts, including the UPFA’s strong-hold Monaragala and Badulla, both the UPFA and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Front (UNF) is running neck and neck.
Although it is not immediately known whether the president’s party, which is presently the main opposition party, would be able to secure an absolute majority in the 225-member parliament, the results released so far clearly indicates that the UPFA would defeat the ruling United National Front (UNF) in most of the 22
districts. — UNI
