Mehbooba’s cavalcade attacked

Militants fired upon the cavalcade of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti near Pahalgam this afternoon. Three police personnel were injured when their escort vehicle skidded following the firing.

The DIG (Anantnag-Pulwama range) said the incident took place near Veer Nagabal at about 3.30 p.m. when Ms Mufti was on her way to Khayar Hapatnar village, near Aishmuqam. The driver of the escort vehicle lost control after hearing the firing shots and the vehicle skidded.

Ms Mufti, who is also the MLA of Pahalgam constituency in Anantnag district, was on her way to Khayar Hapatnar village, part of her Assembly segment, when the attack took place. She later addressed public meetings at several places in the area and on her return paid obeisance at the shrine of Shah Zainuddin Wali at Aishmuqam.

Elsewhere, one militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district last night. The police here said that the militant, identified as Javed Ahmad Gursi of Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen was killed in the encounter in the forest area of Tragpathri. Militants opened fire and kidnapped Mohammad Shafi Khan of Pathribal, in Anantnag district yesterday.

The security forces recovered one AK rifle, two magazines, 60 rounds, one bayonet and a wireless set from a hideout during searches in Shumnag forest area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
