Migrant labourer thanks good Samaritans
Ludhiana, March 27
It was a close brush with death for 17-year-old Jatinder Kumar alias Channu, who was rescued by hundreds of people on Thursday after he was buried under a truck, which was heavily loaded with iron girders and had fallen on footpath. The migrant labourer, who was learning truck repair to earn his livelihood in Punjab to support his family at Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, felt at one moment that he was dead.

City’s fire-fighting equipment archaic

Check supply of underweight cylinders, DC urged
Ludhiana, March 27
The Ludhiana Cooking Gas Consumers Association today submitted a memorandum to Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, regarding the supply of underweight LPG cylinders in the city. The association urged him to take appropriate measures to counter the menace.

Punjab Roadways depot observes ‘no detention’ day

The Punjab Roadways depot observed “no detention day” for the 12th time in the past 21 months here yesterday. Lauding the efforts of workers yesterday, Mr Amritpal Singh Sarkaria, General Manager, said the detention rate of buses in almost all depots of the roadways was mounting due to the non-supply of spare parts from the main office and ban on the purchase of local spare parts for the past three months.

Brick-kilns to close down on April 30
Ludhiana, March 27
All brick-kilns in the district will close down indefinitely from April 30 as earlier decided by the Punjab Brick-Kiln Owners Association. The decision was endorsed at a meeting of the Ludhiana District Brick-Kiln Owners Association here on Monday evening. The meeting was held under the presidentship of Mr Inder Pal Singh Walia. More than 200 brick-kiln owners attended the meeting.

Poultry farmers threaten  to stop production
Ludhiana, March 27
The poultry farmers of the state today threatened to stop the production of chickens for an indefinite period in protest against the policies of the retailers, who, they alleged, were making 200 to 300 per cent profit on poultry products at the cost of farmers.

VC blames vested interests for varsity ills

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Swaran Singh Boparai has said some university employees in the name of promoting Punjabi Language, were to protecting their posts and furthering vested interests. He said that by demanding the study of Punjabi up to matriculation for qualifying as a teacher, these persons were only trying to block the entry of deserving candidates and to facilitate entry of their wards into the university.

32nd Jashn-e-Sahir on April 24
Ludhiana, March 27
Adeeb International (Sahir Cultural Academy) will organise the 32nd Jashn-e-Sahi 2004 celebrations and a mushaira on April 24 to mark the 83rd birth anniversary of Urdu poet, Sahir Ludhianvi, in which Urdu poets from India and Pakistan have been invited to participate. The annual Sahir/Adeeb awards will also be presented.

Amritpal to be sent to USA
Ludhiana, March 27
Impressed by the outstanding performance of a local athlete, Amritpal Singh, the Punjab Sports Department has decided to send him abroad for further training. This was stated by Mr Kartar Singh and Mr D.S. Bains, secretary, Sports, Punjab, here today. They were in the city in connection with the trials being conducted for the speed fund academy run by the department.

The Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) will conduct trials to select probables (u-15 years) here at the Arya College for Boys ground on March 30 at 8 am. According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary secretary, LDCA, the selected players will be enrolled with the regional coaching centre being run by the association under the age is of the Punjab Cricket Association.

Procurement arrangements complete
Ludhiana, March 27
The administration is all set for the procurement of wheat which starts from April 1. Elaborate arrangements have been made in collaboration with the Food and Civil Supplies Department and other procurement agencies that have spread their operations across 99 mandis and purchase centres. A meeting was held here recently in this regard.
