Fuel scam in corporation
Grounded vehicles consuming fuel?
Ludhiana, February 22
A road sweeping machine-cum-tractor of the local Municipal Corporation (MC) has been grounded in Rose Garden for the past one month. But it has consumed 75 litres of diesel without ever been switched on. This is just a small portion of a “fuel scam” unearthed by the local Vigilance Bureau in the MC.

4.5 lakh kids given polio drops
Ludhiana, February 22
As many as 4.5 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 years were administered polio drops in the district during the second round of the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme today. The district administration had put up 1964 polio vaccination booths and 40 static booths to ensure the immunisation of the travelling children.

Yesteryear actor in old age home

Once playing a villain in Hindi movies, this inmate of a senior citizens home here had never imagined that he would be spending the twilight years of his life unattended and uncared for. After the hustle-bustle of life in the Indian film industry at Bombay, this 76-year-old man is now accustomed to a quiet life. Darshan, an actor who performed various roles in Hindi movies of yore, is an inmate of Senior Citizens Home at Sarabha Nagar here. Living on memories, the actor has made himself comfortable in the home and claims he has no regrets.

SAD differences come to fore

After the success of the rally organised by the youth wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the differences between the various factions of the SAD, Ludhiana, have come on the surface. Though the differences among the various leaders had been there, they become more pronounced after the rally of the youth wing on February 16.

Rs 23.66 lakh grant given to villages
Khanna, February 22
Local MLA Harbans Kaur Dullo distributed cheques for Rs 23.66 lakh to various gram panchayats here today. According to a press note, functions in Khatra, Kauri, Baho Majra, Isru, Aloona, Nasrali, Rohno Kala, Rajewal, Ikolaha, Rasulra and Majri villages were organised in this connection.

Khalsa college staff back Khatra
Ludhiana, February 22
The governing council, teaching and non-teaching staff of GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, Ludhiana, through unanimously passed resolutions condemned the “false” and “fabricated” statements being made by Mr Balwant Singh, office clerk, against Mr Manjit Singh Khatra, Director of the college.


Kids meet favourite toons

Children had a gala time as they met with their favourite cartoon characters at a function organised at the ground outside the indoor multipurpose stadium of Guru Nanak Sports Complex here this evening. Kids, accompanied by their parents, thronged the venue and waved enthusiastically at their favourite cartoon characters, who were performing at the stage.

Indo-Pak mushaira  touches hearts

'Kaun parhone ban ke aaya, dono passe kaaga roya'. These were the lines which touched hearts and brought tears in many eyes at a mushaira held at Nishkam Sewa Ashram, Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana.

Concern over favouritism  in sports

A seminar on “Position of Indian sports on international level” was organised at Gobind National College, Narangwal, yesterday. According to Dr Bachiter Singh Somal, Principal of the college, experts shared their views on the subject.

Harpreet Kaur hogs limelight
Ludhiana, February 22
Harpreet Kaur of BA (part II) claimed three titles on the final day of the three-day annual athletics meet of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, here yesterday. However, Kulwinder Kaur was named best athlete by winning events of shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and triple jump.

Nikhil, Kamaljeet adjudged best  athletes
Ludhiana, February 22
Kamaljeet Kaur and Nikhil Chadha were adjudged best athletes in the annual athletics meet of Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College, Daresi Road, here. Nikhil bagged as many as four titles while Kamaljeet annexed one title.

Inspect malkhanas, orders DGP
Ludhiana, February 22
A massive checking of all malkhanas and police stations in the state has been ordered following a powerful blast that rocked a malkhana building in Amritsar. The state DGP, Dr A.A. Siddiqui, in his orders issued to all SSPs, has directed them to immediately conduct thorough inspection of malkhanas, police stations or any place where explosive materials are stored. 

Hotels raided
Ludhiana, February 22
Sales Tax officials conducted raids at hotels along the Ferozepur road here yesterday. Official sources said the raids were conducted at Friends Regency, Maharaja Regency, Nagpal Residency and Le Baron.
