Malika Pukhraj dead

Islamabad, February 4
Malika Pukhraj of “Abhi to main jawan hoon” song fame died in Lahore today after a protracted illness.

She was 90. She is survived by a daughter.

Malika, who was a contemporary of legendary Begum Akhtar, moved to Pakistan after Partition where she continued to sing.

Her voice, though reminiscent of Begum Akhtar, was marked by a simpler and lighter style.

She, along with her singer daughter Tahira Syed, sang several duets that left a mark in the music world.

Besides ‘Abhi to main jawan hoon,’ ‘Jag soze ishq’, ‘Gul zamin ae gul’, ‘Har ek jalwa’, ‘Silsila roze o sham’, ‘Kunjan udyan’, ‘Dard se mere hai’, ‘Ham apne aansuwon’, ‘Tere ishq ki intaha’, ‘Kiya mujh ishq ne’, ‘Lehra ke jhoom ke la’ and ‘Jahan tera naqshe kadam’ are some of her all-time hits. — UNI
