Teacher forced to end life

After suffering harassment allegedly at the hands of her in-laws for three years, a 30-year-old school teacher committed suicide by consuming celphos tablets in the Kothi Megh Singh colony here yesterday.

Farmers' bodies to intensify agitation

As many as eight organisations of farmers comprising Kirti Kisan Union, Kul Hind Kirti Kisan Sabha, Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, Bhartai Kisan Union-Ekta (Sidhupur), Bharati Kisan Union-Ekta (Ugrahana), Punjab Kisan Sabha, Kisan Sangharsh Committee and Punjab Khetibari Vikas Front, have decided to intensify their agitation against the ''anti-farmer policies'' of the Central and state governments.

Misleading of commission won't be tolerated: Shastri

The Chairman of the National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission, Mr Vijay Sonkar Shastri, has said that anybody misleading the commission would not be spared and would be punished with an imprisonment of six months to a year.

Cash, gold stolen; one arrested
Khanna, February 4
Thieves stole cash and gold from a house at Marhia Road on Tuesday night. The residents caught one of them on the spot and handed him over to the Sadar police. According to the information, thieves entered the house of Mr Kewal Singh, an employee of AS Modern School, Khanna, on Tuesday night when the house owners had gone to the market.

Fellow Award for  PAU professor

Dr I.K. Garg, Senior Research Engineer and Head, Department of Farm Power and Machinery has been honoured with Fellow Award by the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers in recognition of his valuable contributions to the agricultural engineering. Knitting contest held
Ludhiana, February 4
Students from Tagore Public School and Baba Isher Singh Public School participated in an aao bune contest held here yesterday. The contest was divided into five categories with students from classes VI to class XI. The students were given a free hand to knit any pattern of their choice on the spot. The winners in each category will participate at a zonal-level competition.

DMCH alma mater to meet on April 10

At a meeting of the executive committee of the DMC Old Students Association (DMCOSA), it has been decided to have the annual meeting of the DMCOSA on April 10 this year and then have a regular annual day for old students on December 10 which also happens to be the college day.

Four murder accused acquitted
Ludhiana, February 4
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.M.S. Mahal, has acquitted four murder accused. Parminder Singh, his wife, Bhupinder Kaur and Gurpreet Singh, all residents of Raikot, and Balour Singh of Halwara were facing the charge of murdering Surjit Singh in July, 2003, by inflicting injuries with the kirpan.

Khalsa Club girls triumph
Ludhiana, February 4
Khalsa Club, Ludhiana, prevailed over the Government College for Women, Ludhiana, 4-3 to the title in the Ludhiana District Women Hockey Tournament that concluded at the Government College for Women ground here today. The issue was resolved via tie-breaker as the two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the regular period.

Prize distribution function
Ludhiana, February 4
Students of Arya Senior Secondary School, who had shown excellence in sports and academics, were honoured at a function held here yesterday. The function began with a song based on the teachings of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. As many as 18 students and three coaches were honoured for bringing laurels to the school.

Ottalan sports festival opens
Samrala, February 4
The 17th sports festival organised by the Youth Welfare Sports Club, Ottalan, 3 km from here, began on the premises of Government Senior Secondary School today. In the horse races, 45 horses took part. The horses of Gahi Singh of Mangewal village, Raja of Balion and Amar Singh Rangian won the first, second and third positions, respectively. The bullockcarts of Rachhpal Singh of Harbanspura, Nirmal Singh Nagra and Jasanpreet Singh of Kauri won the first, second and third positions, respectively.

Sports at Jarkhar from today
Ludhiana, February 4
The three-day sports festival at Jarkhar village near here begins tomorrow. A number of events have been added to this year’s festival. Giving this information, Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu, chairman, Sports Club, Jarkhar, said a meeting of the club was held last evening to take stock of the arrangements made for this event.
