Farmers’ body ridicules Union Govt
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, January 24
The Haryana Kisan Sabha today termed as ridiculous the setting up of the Farmers Commission and launching of Kisan Channel by the Union Government.

The government in whose tenure thousands of farmers had been forced to commit suicide did not have any right to talk about farmers and their concerns, it said.

Mr Krishan Swaroop Gorakhpuria, general secretary of the sabha, said these announcements had nothing to do with the welfare of farmers.

These had been made to pretend to be a farmer friendly government keeping in view the Lok Sabha elections.

He said the same government had cut subsidies on diesel, fertilisers and pesticides.

The INLD government in Haryana was equally responsible for the plight of farmers, he said.

The sabha would launch an agitation on the issues related to farmers in March, he added.

Forum observes Pensioner’s Day
Tribune News Service

Ambala, January 24
The Northern Railway Pensioners Forum observed Pensioner’s Day here today.

The forum demanded that commutation portion of pension be restored after 12 years instead of 15 years as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.

“The forum requests that the facility of companion in the same class instead of second class as this facility is being availed by others. Railway retirees really need the help of companion in old age during journey,” a member of the forum said.

The forum stated that widows and divorced daughters of deceased railway men were entitled to family pension till they attain the age of 25 years.

“This age bar limit of 25 years ought to be removed and extended to the whole life,” the forum said.

“The railway retirees who are not availing themselves of the medical facilities provided by the Railways are being paid Rs 100 only as fixed monthly relief whereas retirees of the Punjab Government are being paid Rs 250 per month as medical relief. The forum appeals to the government to enhance this relief to a minimum of Rs 250 per month and also remove the condition of residence out of the municipal limits.”

The forum pointed out that as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission, when 50 per cent DA will increase, the same may be added in the basic pension and further dearness relief be given on pension plus 50 per cent but the government was refusing to accept this recommendation on one or the other reason, the forum member stated.
