Swami Sandhya Puri, organiser at Harisar Dera, Kila Raipur, has informed that five-day nirwan observation of Swami Dyal Puri Maharaj, founder of the sect, would be held from January 24. He said that Swami Budhpur would supervise the sidhamrit surya kirya yog sadhna camp to be held from Saturday to Monday. A sant sammelan would be held on the next two days, he added.

NULLAH MENACE: Mr Davinder Pal, president, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (district Gurdaspur), has urged the state Minister for Health, Mr Ashwani Sekhri, for the cleanliness of Hausli Nullah, which passes through from the heart of the town. He said that the dirty water of the nullah was a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The nullah should be beautified by planting trees on its banks, he said.

RESENTMENT: Resentment prevails among retired employees of Local Self Government Department of the Punjab Government. At a meeting of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh of Gurdaspur district held here on Thursday, it was mentioned that while the employees of the Local Self Government were getting DA @ 59 per cent, the retirees of the department were getting DA @ 55 per cent. The Minister for Local Self Government was urged that those retirees who had crossed 65 years should be given 5 per cent excess of their basic pay.

SEMINAR ON DRUGS: The Community Policing Resource Centre (CPRC) here organised a seminar on “role of teaching community in prevention of Drug Abuse & HIV/AIDS here on Monday to sensitize college and school teachers about the ill effects of drugs. Nearly 150 principals of colleges and schools participated in the seminar.

: Women power will play a very crucial role in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and the state and district units of the Mahila Congress should channelise all their resources to mobilise women voters to ensure a resounding win for the Congress and pave the way for installation of a Congress government at the Centre. These observations were made by Ms Krishna Mohini while addressing a meeting of the District Mahila Congress in the party office here on Thursday. She said AICC President Sonia Gandhi and All-India Mahila Congress chief Rita Bahuguna had asked all functionaries of the Mahila Congress to gear up for the coming electoral battle.

DEMANDED: Dr Jaspal Singh Randhawa, Principal, Sikh National College, Charan Kanwal, Banga, in a press statement here on Wednesday, commenting on the statements of the Higher Education Minister, Mr Harnam Das Johar, that the 95 per cent salary grants to the government aided colleges had been restored, said if the state government was sincere about it, it should immediately make budgetary allocation for the same.

DHARNA: The employees of the Punjab State Electricity Board organised a dharna in protest against the move of the state government to privatise the Board in front of the office of PSEB here on Wednesday.

CONVICTED: Mr Bhupinder Singh, Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge, Gurdaspur, on Tuesday convicted Madan Lal, a resident of Pakho Chak village near here for possessing 1 kg of ‘charas’ for 10 year’s rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

BODY FOUND: The body of a middle-aged man was found on the GT Road near Sapror village on Wednesday. It appeared that he had been hit by a vehicle.
