Hamira/ Jalandhar, January 12
While the water samples collected by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) show that the effluents being discharged from Jagatjit distillery were polluting water beyond the existing parameters, the board has directed the distillery authorities to take remedial measures and adhere to norms by January 15 or face action.

The PPCB has issued a show-cause notice to the distillery authorities under Section 33 of the Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act-1974, according to board sources.

The board authorities have also suggested that the distillery authorities to eliminate the groundwater problem by installing adequate number of deep tubewells (70 according to the estimate of the board officials), for the purpose of sucking the polluted ground water, sources maintained.

Mr Sandeep Behl, Environment Engineer of the PPCB, confirmed that the samples had confirmed that effluents, even after the last stage of treatment, were causing about 18 times more pollution than the permitted limit. “We have asked them to submit their long and short-term remedial plans for rejuvenation of the already polluted ground water of about six villages within a radius of about 4 km from the factory,” said Mr Behl.
