Major, holed-up militants killed

Srinagar, November 20
Three security personnel, including a Major, and a civilian were killed as the 48-hour stand off between the security forces and militants holed-up in a BSNL office in the high-security cantonment area here ended this evening with the killing of two militants.

Major Navneet and a militant were killed in fresh fighting this morning when after an overnight lull militants hurled grenades at the security forces who fired rockets and mortars in the Badamibagh area close to the headquarters of 15 Corp of the Army and several CRPF camps, a defence spokesman said.

Both militants were killed in the encounter today but the body of only one militant has been found and search for the other was on.

One CRPF personnel, injured in the gunbattle yesterday, succumbed to his injuries today.

The gunbattle broke out on Tuesday evening after a suspected suicide squad of the Al-Mansoorian, a shadow of the Lashker-e-Toiba, attacked a CRPF camp in Indira Nagar locality killing one personnel and injuring three others and took shelter in the BSNL office while fleeing.

One BSNL employee Kuldeep Chand was also killed in the encounter, the sources said, adding that his body was recovered during search operations launched after the firing stopped.

In today’s gunfight, three jawans were also injured.

A defence spokesman clarified that condition of Col P.C. Roy, who was injured during the civilian rescue operation yesterday, was stable and denied reports about his death.

One Lieutnant Colonel, eight security jawans and a civilian were also injured in the three-day gunbattle.

In addition to the extensive damage to the building housing BSNL exchange, four adjacent houses also suffered partial damage. Damage was also caused to some other houses in the vicinity of the site of the encounter.

The police and the security forces were engaged in mopping-up operations after the encounter.

BSNL employee’s body found; staff step up stir

Srinagar, November 20
Employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) today intensified their strike after the body of staffer Kuldeep Singh was recovered this afternoon from the gutted telephone exchange building here.

Kuldeep Singh went missing on November 18 when two suicide bombers entered the Indira Nagar telephone exchange, official sources said.

The body, recovered by the security forces, was handed over to the police, which found his identity card, a BSNL official confirmed today.

The employees stopped work this morning, alleging that the authorities did nothing to locate Kuldeep Singh.

Kuldeep Singh, who was to go on long leave on November 17, postponed his trip after he was told that the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed due to heavy snow.

The spokesman said the Indira Nagar telephone exchange, costing Rs 8 crore and providing service to the 15 Corps in the entire cantonment area was completely damaged in the incident.

He said all 4,000 phone connections were dead and it would be a while before another exchange was installed.

Two suicide bombers of the Al Mansoorain outfit entered the exchange, which was being guarded by SSB personnel, after making an unsuccessful attempt to storm the nearby headquarters of the 62 Battalion of the CRPF on November 18.

All seven SSB personnel have been rescued by the Army. — UNI

Shell explodes, 6 children hurt

Srinagar, November 20
Six children were injured when a shell they were playing with exploded in Baramula district of north Kashmir in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said here today.

The children, aged between eight and 10 years, were playing cricket in Dangiwacha forest area at Rafiabad in the district last evening when they found the unexploded shell and started fiddling with it, the sources said.

The shell went off, injuring six children, they said, adding four of them were shifted to SMHS hospital here and the other two were being treated at the district hospital, Baramula.

Dangiwacha, adjacent to Handwara in frontier district of Kupwara, witnessed many encounters recently. The forest area, having many caves, has been used by militants as hideouts to store arms, ammunition and ration, the sources said. — PTI

Lightning strikes BSF camp, 3 hurt

Jammu, November 20
Three Border Security Force jawans were injured when lightning struck a high-altitude camp in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir last night, official sources said here today.

Lightning struck the BSF camp in Lancha forests in Mahore tehsil of Udhampur, damaging barracks, the sources said.

Three jawans, who were sleeping at the time of the mishap, were injured, the sources said, adding that the jawans were shifted to a military hospital in Udhampur. — PTI

Delay on manuscript issue irks BJP

Irked over the delay in the return of the 545 rare manuscripts which were “smuggled” from the government library here to the Kashmir valley, Mr Ashok Khajuria, general secretary of the BJP, has accused Education Minister, Harshdev Singh, of having failed to fulfil his commitment.

In a statement here today, Mr Khajuria said that the Minister made the announcement on February 12 and the year was coming to an end but nothing had been done to return the heritage of the area here.

He pointed out that the committee headed by Prof Hari Om had identified the manuscripts which were transferred to the Srinagar Library by the successive Kashmir-dominated governments. The people of Jammu have been deprived of the priceless collections.

Mr Khajuria urged the Congress and the Panthers Party, which are coalition partners of the Mufti Government, to pressurise the government to get these manuscripts back to the Sri Ranbir Library here from Srinagar.

Community should preserve heritage

Preservation of the crumbling palaces of the Dogra rulers here was stressed at a workshop organised by the Jammu Press Club and the Amar Mahal Museum here.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof.Amitabh Mattoo, Vice-Chancellor, Jammu University. Mr Ved Bhasin, journalist, presided over the function.

Mr Sat Paul Sahni, journalist, said that the identity of Jammu would receive a setback in case these historical palaces were lost.

Mr Bhasin said of the heritage should be preserved by the local community.

Mr Balraj Puri dwelt on varied aspects of heritage and replied to the questions of participants on the subject.

Mr Lalit Gupta pointed out that there was influence of the Moughal architecture in the Gol Ghar in the Old Palace complex.

He highlighted the importance of Ramnagar town in Udhampur district.

Rights panel issues notice to IG

Srinagar, November 20
The Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission (JKHRC) today issued a notice to the Inspector-General of Police, Jammu Range, in connection with the illegal detention of a youth by a special police officer (SPO) at Surankote in Poonch.

A spokesman for the commission said a telephonic complaint was received from Mohammad Rashid from Surankote that his brother Javed Ahmad was kept under illegal detention by SPO Mushtaq Hussain.

He said the commission issued a notice to the IG for furnishing a detailed report about the matter.

He also directed the Superintendent of Police, Poonch, to ensure that no action beyond the ambit of the law was taken against the detainee. — UNI
