PU looks the other way while colleges overcharge

While protests over a marginal hike in the admission and tuition fee of colleges affiliated to Panjab University continue in the city, the excessive fee being charged by these colleges under the garb of funds and fines, in violation of the Panjab University rules and primarily responsible for the inflated cost of education, has been overlooked and gone unnoticed.

Students unclear about their demands

The ongoing student agitation over fee hike in the local affiliated colleges of Panjab University lacks clarity. Though student leaders from different colleges have got together, they are not clear about their demands in the absence of any concrete data.

SHO, munshi placed under suspension

The Station House Officer and the night munshi of the Phase VIII police station here have been placed under suspension following orders of the DIG Ludhiana range, Mr Sidhaarth Chattopadhyaya, after he found gross irregularities in the functioning of the police station.

Gorkhas to relive days of glory

As hundreds of offices and men of the First Gorkha Rifles (1GR) and the Fourth Gorkha Rifles (4GR), including a handful British officers who once served with the regiments as well as pensioners from Nepal, pass through the imposing Veer Yodha Dwar of the 14 Gorkha Training Centre at Sabathu to attend their reunion next week, they would be looking back at a trail of glory etched over a century and a half.

Police inquest shifts to Bangalore
To question 14 city girls ‘forced’ to dance in pubs

A Chandigarh Police team today left for Bangalore to inquire from the 14 city girls who were allegedly forced into dancing in pubs in the South Indian city despite being recruited to work in music albums.

Chennai-city train arrives

On its maiden trip, the Chennai-Chandigarh Link Express today arrived at the Chandigarh railway station with few passengers on board. After covering a distance of 2500 km in over 49 hours, the train chugged along the platform No. 2. For its return journey, the train is scheduled to leave the Chandigarh railway station tomorrow at 7.10 am.

Man arrested on charge of rape
Chandigarh, November 2
A Union Territory Electricity Department upper division clerk today allegedly raped his 19-year-old newly wed maid servant in Bijli Colony at Kajheri, Sector 52. The police arrested Ramesh Kumar, 35, on the basis of a statement of the victim and booked him for allegedly raping the woman.

Teenaged girl crushed to death
Chandigarh, November 2
A teenaged girl from Deria was crushed to death this evening and two others were seriously injured by a truck near the Sukhna petrol station in Sector 28. They were going in a rickshaw.

Gang of thieves busted, five held
Panchkula, November 2
Allegedly involved in auto theft and other criminal cases in and around the township, the police arrested five members of a gang from Sector 23, here today. The members of the gang have been identified as Rajan Dyal of Burail in Chandigarh, Sunil of New Indira Colony in Chandigarh, Prabhjot, alias Dimple, of Bartana near Zirakpur, Kuldeep Singh of Shahshod near Dera Bassi, and Mehar of Indira colony in Panchkula.
