Sonia for reviewing security of women New Delhi, October 16 In a letter to Mr Advani, Ms Gandhi said increasing incidents of crimes against women in Delhi in recent times had shaken the city and instilled a deep sense of insecurity among the Capital’s citizens. “The involvement of men of the President’s Body Guard, the rape of a foreign diplomat and similar incidents show that the overall law and order situation had been allowed to deteriorate to such a level that virtually no one was safe. I am sure that you and your government will agree that the protection of the rights and dignity of women is one of the prime requisites of civilised society,” Ms Gandhi said. The Leader of Opposition said incidents of rape and molestations, particularly in the Capital, could not be dealt with in a routine manner. “Effective preventive measures and quick and firm action against the perpetrators of crime is necessary. I would like to suggest that the entire situation concerning the safety of women in Delhi should be immediately reviewed at your level with all concerned for preparing a comprehensive action plan for this specific purpose,’’ she said. |
Rape of festival’s reputation New Delhi, October 16 Whatever reputation it did have, stands sullied due to the stigma of the rape of a Swiss national. And to think that Switzerland is the “country in focus” in the festival. What is in focus now is only the gruesome incident. Whosoever committed the crime, also outraged the modesty of the festival and the country. One of the pleasures of attending such festivals is the enlightened discussion one can have on the finer nuances of film-making with people who live and breathe cinema. But now the only topic of discussion here is the utter disbelief over the incident. The police presence has increased manifold. But that is a classic case of locking the stables after the horses have bolted. However, since the motto of film world is that the “show must go on”, one has to pull the attention back to the films that are on show. One of the most powerful films of the festival in the “Cinema of the World” section, “Nowhere in Africa”, was screened at the Siri Fort Auditorium last night. The German film directed by Caroline Link is an overpowering reminder of the horror perpetrated by Nazi rule. Lakhs of Jews were sent to the gas chambers. Only slightly better was the plight of those who survived. This film is about one such couple and their young daughter. They manage to get away from Germany just days before the Nazi terror starts. They land in Kenya and their life of impoverishment on a farm is a sea change from the lifestyle they led in their homeland. The daughter reconciles to the new reality soon enough, but not her parents. The situation is made worse by the outbreak of war. German Jews are interned by the British, who rule Kenya. The distraught lawyer longs for Germany despite becoming certain that his family in Germany has been murdered by the Nazis. He joins the army under the British to escape the hardship of a farm, but the wife decides to stay put. When the Nazis are overthrown, he dreams of going back to Germany, but not his family. These multiple layers of human emotions and conflict have been woven so masterfully by Link that the film has won the Oscar for best foreign-language film, the FIPRESCI and Special Jury awards at Karlovy Vary, the Mayor’s Prize at Jerusalem, the Audience Award at Hamptons, the Bavarian Film Award and the Grand Prize of the Jury and the best screenplay award at Bordeaux.
***** The nudity which some invariably associate with uncensored films in a festival is hardly present this time, but “This Girl’s Life” screened today is an exception. Its in-your-face sensuality is as per the demand of the screenplay because the American film narrates the story of a porn star, Moon (Juliette Marquis). The film written and directed by London-born Ash takes a searing look at modern morality and the adult-film industry. The director’s degree in experimental psychology ensures that the slice-of-life view is microscopic. Told from a female perspective, this guilt-free, voyeuristic sexuality emerging in the rising generation is explored as the young sex star’s world unravels. In her personal life dominated by a father (James Woods) suffering from Parkinson’s disease and a blind date (Kip Pardue), she tests the boundaries of herself and those around her. |
PM should rise above party lines, say
ex-PMs New Delhi, October 16 Addressing a joint press conference on the eve of the congregation by Ram bhakts in Ayodhya, they said the VHP had been issuing threats of violence if their activists were prevented from having darshan. Mr V.P. Singh was the Prime Minister when Mr L.K. Advani’s rath yatra in 1990 was stopped from entering Uttar Pradesh by the then Chief Minister, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav. The BJP, which was extending support to the coalition government, withdrew support on this issue and the Janata Dal government was reduced to a minority. Equating the provocative statements of VHP general secretary Pravin Togadia with those of terrorists, the two PMs said stern action should be taken against all those, who issued such statement as they undermined the secular fabric of the nation. Mr Gujral said the issue had been lingering in the courts for over four decades and the judiciary should also
expedite and pronounce its order at the earliest. Meanwhile, the All-India Babri Masjid Re-Building Committee has urged the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to ban organisations like the VHP and arrest its leaders for making communal and provocative speeches. The head of the committee, Mohammad Yonus Siddiqui, in a letter to the President, said the proposed VHP march tomorrow was in violation of court orders. |
India, SA for strategic partnership New Delhi, October 16 The visiting South African President, Mr Thabo Mbeki, today met the top Indian leadership, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Joint Declaration talked about the “strategic partnership” between India and South Africa which it stressed was guided by the common vision of a global order marked by peace, security and equity. The two countries also inked a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty which provides for each side giving the widest measure of mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and aims at
strengthening cooperation between them in investigation and prosecution of crimes and terrorist cases. |

Sonia hits back on foreign origin issue Jaipur, October 16 “Those pointing an accusing finger at me should first explain what traditions have I not followed after I became a member of the Nehru family. “What Indian tradition have I not adhered to after I became the daughter-in-law of Ms Indira Gandhi ... as daughter-in-law, wife, mother, widow and citizen, what moral conduct did I not

BJP trains guns on Jogi’s son New Delhi, October 16 BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar today contended that the Chief Minister’s son continued to hold US citizenship and charged that he had not obtained Indian citizenship as claimed by his father. The Home Ministry was yet to receive “renunciation certificate” from the US authorities, a prerequisite for granting Indian citizenship. |
Hema Malini says she will work for BJP New Delhi, October 16 “I shall do all the work for the BJP. Though I am not a member of the party I would love to be associated with the BJP. I am here because of them only,” 55-year-old Malini, whose swearing in coincided with her
