The suspension orders of a Punjab Police Inspector given after Congress Minister Malkiat Singh Birmi threatened to quit has caused strong resentment among police officers who feel that such an action would lead to the demoralisation of the force, and in future cops would not dare to challenge the alleged hooliganism caused by VIPs and their wards.

Two persons were found murdered in separate incidents here today. Fifty-year-old Ram Singh was found stabbed to death in his shop in Chaura Bazar this morning while a middle-aged man, Pawan Sharma, was found strangled to death in a gurdwara in Janakpuri this afternoon.

Members were congratulated on their birthdays and marriage anniversaries. A cultural programme was organised on the occasion. A meena bazar was built with many stalls of different items for women. The main attraction of the programme was the ‘Karva queen’ contest in which more than 20 members of the club participated.

Students draw public’s attention to pollution

About 300 students of Government College for Women took part in a public awareness rally under the banner of the Eco Club here today. Ms Kusum Ahuja, Principal, addressing the students, said the chief aim of the rally was to make residents aware of pollution in the city. The volunteers carried banners, posters and charts that displayed the ill-effects of pollution on the health of people.

JE acquitted in graft case

Special Judge Inderjit Kaushik has acquitted Paramjit Singh, a junior engineer with the PSEB, accused of accepting Rs 2,000 as illegal gratification in 1998 from a farmer, as the charges levelled against him could not be proved. The shadow witness had turned hostile in the case.

Undertrials abuse cops at court complex

Ugly scenes were witnessed at “bakshikhana” in the New Court Complex here today when some undertrials protested against the alleged pick-and-choose policy of the police while allowing the undertrials to meet their relatives and friends.

URING the festival season, the demand for sweets is very high. People like colourful sweets. However, most colourings contain synthetic chemicals. As colouring are used mostly in food items of low nutritional value, like candies and sweets, you should avoid all artificially coloured items. Colourings cause hyperactivity in some sensitive children. The use of colouring usually indicates that fruit or any other natural ingredient has not been used.

Hosts Ludhiana recorded 5-wicket win over Patiala to keep hopes alive for the title in the 3rd Punjab State Cricket Tournament for the Deaf and Dumb being played at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here today. Earlier in the inaugural match of the tournament, last year’s losing finalists, Ludhiana, had lost the battle rather tamely against defending champions Jalandhar.
