Snow in higher reaches of Dhauladhars

Shimla, September 24
The higher reaches of the Dhauladhar ranges had first snowfall of the season, while the rest of Himachal Pradesh by and large went without rain since last night.

According to reports reaching here today, there was mild snow fall on the peaks of the Dhauladhar ranges. There was also mild snow fall in the higher peaks surrounding the Spiti valley, a report from Kaza, the headquarters of the valley, said.

According to the weather office here the capital hill resort and various other parts of the state went without rain since last night. However, Bhuntar in Kulu district recorded 3.4 mm of rain since last night. In the capital town here the minimum temperature dipped from 15.2°C yesterday to 14.0°C today due to the heavy downpour yesterday.

This dip in temperatures has even forced a majority of local residents to put on their cardigans. A report from Dharamsala said the rain yesterday accompanied by strong winds had caused wide spread damage to the ripening kharif crop, mainly paddy and maize. There were also landslides at a number of places cutting off the interior villages in the upper regions of Kangra district.

There was a rise in the water level in the ‘khads’ as a result of in the upper reaches of the Dhauladhar’s, the report said.

The Kangra district administration has warned the locals not to venture close to the ‘khads’for grazing their livestock. Meanwhile, due to the heavy rain yesterday, the Kalka-Shimla national highway remained closed for about two hours following landslide near Parwanoo yesterday morning. Vehicular traffic remained suspended on both sides and the road with the help of bulldozers was later cleared and traffic resumed.

There were also reports of landslides near the Brauni Khad in the Rampur tehsil in Shimla district due to yesterday’s downpour that blocked the National Highway No. 22 for few hours. The road was later cleared. — UNI
