Joint India-Pak Olympic bid favoured Wagah, September 17 Mr Kalmadi was hopeful that both India and Pakistan would forcefully present their case to the International Olympic Committee for hosting the 2016 Olympics. He said at their two-day meeting with their counterparts in Islamabad modalities for hosting various international meets as joint contenders would be discussed. He said that the peace initiative undertaken by both the countries should be pushed through sports. He welcomed the backing of India’s bid to host Commonwealth Games in 2010 by the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) and said that it was a good gesture which would forge better sporting ties between the neighbours. He said Canada, too, had offered to host the Games but Pakistan had supported India’s bid. Mr Kalmadi said the entire sporting fraternity in India and Pakistan was deadly against snapping of sporting ties which had done great harm not only to the sports in the region but had soured the relations between the two nations. He said that the sporting ties should continue at all the levels despite many hurdles and tension. Expressing his anguish that sports had become a victim of politics he felt that since India and Pakistan were sports-loving countries, cricket and hockey ties should be immediately resumed. This would generate goodwill and warmth in relations as enthusiastic crowds always look forward to India-Pakistan duels. The meeting between India and Pakistan Olympic Associations will chalk out the schedule for the SAARC games to be held next year. Mr Kalmadi said Pakistan has been formally invited to participate in the Afro-Asian Games to be held at Hyderabad from October 24. He strongly favoured strengthening of sports and cultural relations which would help reduce tension between both the countries. The Indian delegation led by Mr Kalmadi included his wife Meera Kalmadi, secretary-general of the IOA, Mr Randhir Singh, Mr B. S. Ojha and Mr Aslam Khan, both vice-presidents, and Mr Aziz Qureshi. The delegation was warmly received by Syad Wazid Ali Khan, president POA, along with other members of the association. |
Resume cricket ties, says Musharraf
Islamabad, September 17 He said while the millions of people in the subcontinent would like to see the two countries playing against each other it was unfortunate that two teams could not play due to strained relations and hoped that cricket ties would be restored at the earliest. Felicitating the senior Pakistan cricketers who were part of the team which visited India for the first time in 1952, the President asserted that “Pakistan likes to play India for mutual benefit of the cricketers and game itself,” Describing South Asia a virtually a huge nursery for the game as there was abundance of talent as each of the three Test playing countries in the region had won the World Cup, he said the need of the hour was “increased inter-action” for the benefit of cricket and to keep sports away from politics”. While presenting medallions to former Pakistan stars, including Hanif Muhammad and Fazal Mehmood, who took part in the first series against India, the President said as a boy “I was always inspired by the cricket greats”. “I looked up to them as a schoolboy, the way they ‘Fazzaled’ England,” he said referring to former fast bowler Fazal Mehmood’s feat in the Oval Test. “There was also then the little master Hanif Muhammad, elegance of Waqar Hassan, speed of Khan Muhammad, aggressive cricket of Imtiaz Ahmed and the great tactician and captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar who formed part of the 1952-53 Pakistan team.” The team won the Lucknow Test against India on their debut tour abroad and then became the first-ever team to win a Test at Oval on its very first visit to England. He also honoured the visiting Bangaldesh team and praised the way the visitors put up a fight against strong Pakistan team. “I am of the view that the Bangladesh cricket team has shown tremendous improvement. It was Inzamam who stood between you and victory (in the third Test),” he said. The President also gave away cash prizes to the players of the present team for winning the Test and one day series against Bangladesh. — UNI |

Pak confident of
winning Asia Cup
Lahore (Pakistan), September 17 Pakistan, winner of three Olympic and four world titles, have not won the quadrennial Asia Cup since 1989 and finished a worst ever fourth in last year’s tournament in Busan, South Korea. Defending champions South Korea are grouped with Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong. Arch rivals Pakistan and India meet on September 24 in the last match of group B which also includes Bangladesh and China. The winner of the Asia Cup will get direct entry into the 2006 World Cup in Germany. India, with eight Olympic titles, beat Pakistan by a record scoreline of 7-4 at last month’s Champions Trophy in the Netherlands but Pakistan avenged through a 4-3 win in the play-off to finish third in the tournament. India will sorely miss penalty corner expert Jugraj Singh who is sidelined due to serious injuries he sustained in a car accident earlier this month. Zaman expects a traditionally hostile contest. “Even if Jugraj is not there, I feel India has the strength to put a tough fight and it will be another mouth watering clash,” said Zaman, a former captain and Olympian. South Korea have already qualified for next year’s Athens Olympics while Pakistan and India will have to play Olympic qualifying rounds in Madrid, Spain in March next year. SAI lab gets dope test certification New Delhi, September 17 The ISO 9001 certification given to the SAI lab in December, 2002 was not sufficient enough for it to conduct dope testing with the sanction of the IOC. With the SAI Dope Control Centre updating its machinery, and completing all the necessary formalities, it was awarded the much-awaited ISO 17025 certification on September 15. Experts from Japan had come to New Delhi to update the lab facilities. The SAI Dope Control Centre has now completed all the mandatory requirements for seeking accreditation by the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC accreditation now remains just a formality, and if it comes through, it would be a great relief for the country as then India would be able to conduct the dope testing of the athletes of the inaugural Afro Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Hyderabad from October 24 to November 1, at the SAI lab, which will save a lot of money and bother to the hosts. The SAI proposes to submit a formal application for accreditation to the IOC Medical Commission and World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), and the SAI is also actively following the tone set by the WADA. There are 30 IOC-accredited Dope Control Laboratories in the world of which five are in the Asia-Pacific Region. And India will also join the elite rank very soon. |
Three records in national aquatics Kolkata, September 17 Nisha in the process eclipsed her state mate Shikha Tandon’s national record of 4:38.04 s, set in 1998. Nisha said she was happy with her timing since she was coming back after four years of lay-off due to her back problems. She said, however, her best timing was 4:29.6s, set in the Asia-Pacific meet in New Delhi in 1999. Richa Sharma today eclipsed Meghana Narayan’s record of 30.57s in the 50 mt butterfly. The third record of the day was set by K Rajiv of Kerala clocking 26.27s in the 50 mt butterfly for men and in the process drowned Shane Pedder’s national record of 26.44s in the same category. Delhi and Police teams drubbed Manipur and Karnataka 21-5 and 11-1 respectively in the opening league matches of the men’s waterpolo at the Subhas Sarovar swimming complex here today. While group ‘A’s Delhi team showed their dominance right from the beginning leading 16-0 at one stage against Manipur, group ‘C’s Police team also

AC Milan, Real triumph
London, September 17 Milan began the defence of the trophy they won last May with a battling 1-0 win over an impressive Ajax Amsterdam side at the San Siro with the irrepressible Filippo Inzaghi on the scoresheet again. But the champions ended the match with 10 men following a stoppage time red cad for Gennaro Gattuso. Real Madrid, bidding to become European champions for an unprecedented 10th time, gave a superb attacking performance to beat Olympique Marseille 4-2 at the Bernabeu Stadium. Ronaldo was on target twice for the Spanish side, while Roberto Carlos and Luis Figo, with a twice-taken penalty, added the others after Marseille had the temerity to score first. Manchester United were also in superb form, thumping Panathinaikos of Greece 5-0 at Old Trafford — with the first four goals all coming in the opening half. For once, Ruud Van Nistelrooy failed to score, but goals from Mikael Silvestre, Quinton Fortune, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Nicky Butt and Eric Djemba Djemba more than made up for that. Big-spending Chelsea began their quest for glory with a 1-0 win at Sparta Prague, the only goal coming five minutes from time. But none of the crop of big-name strikers who arrived in the summer found the net. Instead, defender William Gallas steered the ball home in the 85th minute to give them an important victory. Milan, who scored just one goal in open play in the last five matches they played in the Champions League last season, had to wait until midway through the second half to open their account this time around. The breakthrough came through Inzaghi after Ajax goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont had parried a shot from Andriy Shevchenko in the 67th minute. While AC Milan were carving out a slender win over Ajax, Real Madrid produced a great attacking display to see off Marseille. Marseille scored first when Didier Drogba punished some typically sloppy defending by the home side with a 26th minute strike. But Real were level within three minutes after Roberto Carlos volleyed home a David Beckham cross. Ronaldo then scored twice after 34 and 57 minutes before Figo added the fourth with a twice-taken penalty. Daniel van Buyten exposed Real’s defensive frailties with an unchallenged 83rd minute header, but that was not enough to stop 70,000 Real fans going home happy. — Reuters |
