Argyle, Smith to the fore in Rally Hokkaido Obihiro (Japan), September 15 Nutahara is second with 32 points while Kremer follows closely behind with 31 points. Kremer’s steady showing also fetched him the group N(unmodified cars) standings lead. He has accumulated 47 points while Nutahara only has 40 points in the group. The day today dawned bright and clear after continuous rain yesterday though the drivers had problems in the morning due to wet and soggy tracks. By during later stages the tracks did dry up a little, making it easier for the drivers and the spectators alike. The spectators flocked to the rally routes in large numbers today, cheering the home drivers. Most were disappointed to see Fumio Nutahara go out of the title race yesterday. Armin Kremer and Fred Berssen finished first in group N despite an average showing. A total of five legs were held today and Kremer’s best showing was in stage 18th were he finished fifth. Geoff Argyle drove steadily for most stages but finished by winning the last and 19th stage. Australia’s Christopher Atkinson and co-driver Benjamin Atkinson, driving for Monster Sport Australia finished third in the title race for Rally Hokkaido and were second in group A, behind Argyle and Smith. Hoping to win some leg points to make up for going out of the title race, Malaysia’s Karamjit Singh and Allen OH Siew Sein of Petronas EON Racing Team won two stages - 15th and 17th -as a consolation. In fact, Karamjit posted a fast time of 12. 29. 4 in the first stage of the day, the 15th stage. Inspite of the rain turning the tracks soggy and slippery he had more than a 15-second lead over
Nutahara, who also had some good results today. Even in stage 17 Karamjit had a five-second lead over the next driver. He also finished second behind Fumio Nutahara in stage 18. In all it was a good day for
Karamjit, making up a little bit for the disappointment of going out of the title race on the first day itself. There was a difference of a few micro seconds between Karamjit and Nutahara in this stage. Karamjit is a distant fourth in the overall Asia-Pacific Championship standings with 16 points. MRF Tyres’ other driver David Doppelreiter also tried to make up for lost
opportunities and gain experience for the coming Asia-Pacific rallies in Thailand and India. He finished third in the last stage. In group N he is quite behind the leaders and is fourth with 16 points while in the overall Asia-Pacific standings he is only ninth with six points. |

Patiala
260 for 7 Patiala, September 14 At stumps, the hosts recovered from their lunch time score of 62 for 5 to end up the day at a comfortable 260 for 7. Opting to bat after winning the toss on a docile wicket, the hosts soon found themselves staring down the barrel with the top layer of the batting order being jilted by medium pacer V.R.V Singh. The well-built Chandigarh bowler bowled with fire and at 62 for 5 he single handedly had the hosts on the mat. Once V.R.V Singh was taken off by his skipper after his first spell in which he captured three important wickets, the hosts slowly crawled their way back into contention with the experienced Lakhbir Singh and Anup Kumar combining well to add 90 runs for the sixth wicket. Lakhbir Singh played an innings full of steely resolve while Anup played the role of a sheet anchor to hold the innings together till the end. The hosts were sailing comfortably at 152 for 6 when in a sudden rush of blood Lakhbir tried to cart the bowler over mid wicket but found the ball hitting the stumps. Rajiv Sirhindi joined the diminutive Anup at the fall of Lakhbir’s wicket and played a breezy knock of 30 studded with five boundaries and one six. At draw of stumps, the hosts had scored 260 for 7 in their stipulated 90 overs with young Gautam Mandora remaining unbeaten on 24. Brief scores:
Patiala:1st innings: 260 for 7 (Lakhbir Singh 67, Anup Kumar 70, Rupeetinder Singh 20, Rajiv Sirhindi 30, Gautam Mandora 24 n.o, V.R.V Singh 3 for 49, Amandeep Singh 1 for 40, Sandeep 1 for 67)
