JeM admits Gazi Baba killed
Threatens to take revenge

Srinagar, September 1
The BSF today played a radio intercept in which the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has admitted that its chief commander in the Kashmir valley Gazi Baba has been killed. It has threatened to avenge his killing by launching strikes at security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking in fluent Urdu in the radio broadcast, played before mediapersons by BSF Director General Ajai Raj Sharma, the orator said, “The beat of our hearts, the crown of our heads, our beloved commander Gazi Baba and his deputy have left (for heavenly abode)... May God accept their sacrifice.”

The speaker asked the JeM cadres not to be demoralised by the loss of Gazi Baba and asked them to “inflict sorrow and grief on those who are happy on his killing.”

Mr Sharma, who was here to visit the jawans and officers injured in the encounter on August 30, said this should put to rest the controversy surrounding the identity of the slain militant.

Describing the killing of Gazi Baba as one of the biggest achievements of the BSF, Mr Sharma said the slain militant’s wife had given a statement identifying his body.

“We have done careful cross-checks on his identity and only then did we conclude that it was him. But if anybody has any evidence contrary to it, we have an open mind on it,” he said.

Among other things that have been helpful in proving the identity of Gazi Baba were the prominent mark on his eyebrow, eye tests, the dental structure and the testimony of a BSF source who had seen the militant during his lifetime, Mr Sharma said. — PTI

BJP at the receiving end over Dogri
Our Correspondent

Jammu, September 1
While critics of the BJP blame the state unit of the party for its failure to persuade Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to clear the inclusion of the Dogri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, the Sangh Parivar is in no mood to be on the receiving end.

Senior BJP leaders say that the NDA government is considering the matter, but there are some practical difficulties. The BJP-led Central Government has received demands from various corners of the country seeking the inclusion of several regional languages in the 8th Schedule.

The Centre has a list of 35 regional languages and as such it cannot pick up one and reject the others

Dr Nirmal Singh, president of the state unit of the BJP, said he had submitted a list of demands to the Prime Minister. It included the inclusion of Dogri in the 8th Schedule, financial aid to Jammu University and implementation of the Wazir Commission recommendations.

Dr Nirmal Singh said, “Our critics in the coalition government blame us for the delay in the acceptance of these demands without realising that the ruling coalition leaders have done nothing so far.”

It was difficult to remain sane, says Ranjit

Karyal Brahmana (Jammu), September 1
Ranjit Kumar has finally returned to his home village Karyal Brahmana amid scenes of jubilation after spending about 50 months in different jails of Pakistan.

His house was flooded with visitors even as people from adjoining villages came to see him. It was a hard time for the teenager as he was kept busy answering the queries of visitors who kept asking him about the people of Pakistan.

It is all because of the blessings of my mother and sister that I have come back home from a Pakistani jail as I had given up hope after all these years, he said. The boy still feels a chill in his spine when one questions him about the time spent in Pakistani jails.

He said as far as food and other facilities were concerned, the Indian prisoners were served food once a day and the agony and the treatment one got there was unbearable and it became difficult for a person to remain sane in such conditions. Most of the Indians languishing in jails were suffering from mental illnesses because of the hostile behaviour of their captors, he added.

“I have to start my life all over again and think about my future. It is going to be a big challenge deciding whether to resume my studies or take up some job to help my brother in supporting the family,” he added.

Ranjit’s family comprises his mother, sister and an elder brother. His brother is a pick-up truck driver and at present is the lone bread-earner of the family.

Ranjit had mistakenly strayed into Pakistan while wandering about after being reprimanded by his mother over studies. “My sentence was completed in 2001 but I was not released as my antecedents were not confirmed by the Indian Government,” he added. — UNI
