An eight-year-old child was kidnapped when he was coming back from school in Sector 71 here today.
It is reported that Harkaran Singh, a student of Class III at St Xaviers School, was kidnapped by two car-borne persons soon after he left the school.

30-yr-old man drowns in rivulet

Chandigarh, August 25
A 30-year-old rickshaw-puller drowned in the rivulet of Sukhna Lake towards the regulator end here today. According to information, Gajram, a resident of Mani Majra, was going to Saketri Temple along with his cousin sisters — Meera, Seema and Ramputlie — and a friend on his rehri, when the incident took place.

Man stabbed to death
Chandigarh, August 25
Jagdish Kumar (27) was stabbed to death by three youths in Ram Darbar, Phase I, here tonight. He was stabbed at least six times. This is the third murder in the city in this month. Tonight’s murder, said the police, was a result of group rivalry. Some friends of the victim alleged that a resident of the same area, Chottu, was the main accused. He was carrying a knife, they said.

Octroi imposed on companies having godown in Zirakpur
Zirakpur, August 25
Tightening the noose around companies which are evading taxes by misusing the proximity of Zirakpur to Chandigarh, the Punjab Government has decided to charge octroi from those having major storage and forwarding godowns in the area.

City put on high alert

The Chandigarh Police today beefed up security and surveillance at the entry points to the city, vital installations, markets and other public places and declared ‘high alert’ in the wake of Mumbai blasts.

Rehabilitate oustees, panel urges commission
Chandigarh, August 25
The Pind Bachao Committee — a society of at least 5000 families of 11 UT villages — has approached the Chairman, National Commission for Minorities of India, Mr Tarlochan Singh, seeking his intervention to rehabilitate the original residents of the city.

Abhishek’s mother meets Governor

The Administration has sought a legal view on what can be done in the case of city lad, 15-year-old Abhishek Ahluwalia, whose leg was amputated. The Shivalik Enclave Welfare Association and the mother of Abhishek met the UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (retd), today and demanded action against Inscol.

Bag snatched at gunpoint
Panchkula, August 25
In a daring robbery, two gun-toting youths snatched a bag from a local resident in front of his Sector 7 residence this morning. Mr Hari Krishan Kakkar, a financier who runs a business in Chandigarh, was about to leave for work around 8.50 a.m. when the incident occurred.

1 hurt in Mataur clash, 8 held
SAS Nagar, August 25
Eight persons were arrested in Mataur village, near here, today following a clash in which a woman was injured last night.
The clash took place among residents of two adjoining houses over a common wall between the two buildings.

Cyclist killed in mishap
Chandigarh, August 25
A Panchkula resident, Vijay Kumar, died when his cycle was allegedly hit by a military truck (DI11811344) near N Area here in the last evening. The truck driver, Mahesh Kumar, was arrested and later released on bail.

CTU driver kills self
Lalru, August 25
Ajaib Singh, a driver with the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his home in Tasimbali village, about 15 km from here, this morning.

Showcasing pain in play

A prize distribution function was held at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula. The Chief Guest of the function, Deputy Commissioner Satwanti Ahlawat lit the lamp. In a memorandum addressed to the President of India signed by 1,005 members of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, lawyer Tahar Singh and his advocate friends have sought “the transfer of all local judges of different high courts whose children, spouses or relatives were practising in their courts”.

Ex-DEO Malti placed under observation

Ropar’s former District Education Officer Malti Batra has been placed under observation, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court was today informed. Expressing doubts over her mental state, the Bench had, on the last date of hearing, directed the Registrar-General to send her for examination to the Psychiatry Department of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

HC stays Asst Engg’s termination

Issuing notice of motion for September 22, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed the termination of an Assistant Engineer with the Wakf Board. He had married an Ambala-based girl, who had managed to give a slip to her second husband on way to Vaishno Devi before returning to the petitioner — her “legal” husband.

President of the Students Organisation of Panjab University Khushwaz Singh Jattana, who was arrested by the UT police in an attempt to murder case, was granted bail today by the UT Additional and Sessions Judge.

Kharar, August 25
Mrs Baljinder Kaur Bhatia, Judicial Magistrate, here today remanded Rajinder Singh Sandhu, who was arrested by the SAS Nagar police on the charge of murdering his wife, Gurinder Kaur in Phase X on August 21, to police custody till August 27.

One million suffer from rheumatic heart disease

In India, there are over one million patients suffering from rheumatic heart disease and it is responsible for upto 5 lakh deaths annually. These are the findings recorded by the Head of the Cardiology Department in the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Dr Anil Grover, and Dr Archana Bhatnagar, also of the institute.

Sacred Heart girls annex soccer title

Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, clinched the soccer title in the Ist Chandigarh Sub-junior Girls Football Championship which concluded here today at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. In a well contested final, they overpowered Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, by 3-1 in tie breaker.
