Bhajan Lal backs Advani Chandigarh, August 22 Talking to reporters here on return from Amritsar the PCC chief, who visited the holy city with his wife and Mr Jagdeep Singh Cheema, Chairman of the Haryana Congress’ minority cell, said today was an auspicious day for him as he could pay obeisance at Harmandar Sahib. He also visited the Durgiana temple and Jalianwala Bagh. He showered praise on the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) for upgrading the infrastructure at the temple. “The Sikh Gurus had made immense sacrifices. They were also symbols of compassion and humanity”, Mr Bhajan Lal said, reading out from a written statement. The PCC chief, however, launched a no-holds-barred onslaught against his rivals when asked about the recent attack on him by Congress MLA Raghubir Singh Kadian. About the allegation having a secret understanding with Mr Om Prakash Chautala and Mr Bansi Lal for perpetuating the reign of the “three Lals” in the state, Mr Bhajan Lal said he had taken a serious view of Mr Kadian’s allegation. “Action will be taken against the guilty person,” the PCC chief said. Without naming Mr Kadian, Mr Bhajan Lal said all those who had come to the Congress from the INLD were “ruffians” (badmash). “Those who make such allegations against me actually owe their allegiance to Mr Om Prakash Chautala”, he said. The PCC chief, also strongly attacked the Devi Lal family on Mr Abhay Chautala’s announcement about contesting the next assembly elections from Kalka, now represented by Mr Bhajan Lal’s son, he said Mr Chautala was running away from his Rori constituency. About the decision to call off ‘jail bharo’ which was launched for completion of the SYL canal, Mr Bhajan Lal said the case was expedited in the court because of the agitation launched by the PCC. “Now that the court would give a directive in due course of time, our agitation is not required any more”, he said. He was in favour of holding the assembly and Lok Sabha poll simultaneously. However, states that had completed short tenures should be spared, he added. |

Cement
gone, probe on Sirsa, August 22 Complaints of negligence on part of the contractor concerned was lodged with the Deputy Commissioner and the Public Health Department by citizens living in the area where the pipe was being laid. In spite of this, the contractor ignored all parameters and completed the project. Those living in this area allege that the executing company has embezzled a huge amount of money and left them to face the consequences. This project was sanctioned in 1996 for improving the disposal of sewage and rainwater from one end of the city to the treatment plant near Kelania village on the other end. The work that began in 1997 was stopped soon afterwards under pressure from citizens and businessmen who wanted big pipes to be laid in the city area. The project was modified and resumed in October, 2002, to lay 72-inch-diameter pipes and 54-inch-diameter pipes over 6,000 feet at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore. Mr Pardeep Kumar, who runs a hotel, and Mr Kalu, who runs a grocery store near the samadhi of Baba Bihari, said the executing company had ignored suggestions given by other officials. Many other shopkeepers of the area like Mr Ranjeet, Mr Balkishan and Mr Ashwani alleged that the company had not prepared proper beds before laying the pipes. The digging had been improper and the pipes had not been joined well. The municipal councillor of the area had been told about the technical flaw. Technical officials of the Public Health Department said the department had supplied an adequate number of cement bags for preparing the bed. However, where these cement bags vanished. The
Deputy Commissioner, Mr D. Suresh, when contacted, admitted to having
received the complaint. “The Superintendent Engineer, Public Health
Department, has been ordered to conduct an inquiry,” he said. The
inquiry officer, Mr R.C. Bansal, when contacted, said he had not been
able to finish the probe because of rains. |

Ultrasound facility resumes at hospital Ambala, August 22 The city hospital is a district-level hospital and hundreds of patients from throughout the district come here to avail of specialised medical services. The ultrasound machine of the hospital had gone out of order as one of its important parts had become defective. The machine was supplied by a
Chennai-based company which had demanded Rs 2 lakh in advance to get it repaired. The Health Directorate could not decide for six months as to from which head of fund the advance amount should be paid. Recently, the department had sent the amount to the hospital authorities for the repair but even after repeated reminders, the Chennai-based company has not given good response. Hospital sources said it would take another two months for getting the machine repaired. For the time being, the department has shifted the ultrasound of the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, to the Ambala City hospital as it was not being there due to non-availability of a radiologist. There has been no radiologist in the city hospital, too, for the past six months. The Ambala Health Department has engaged a private radiologist through the Red Cross Society. Emergency cases would be deprived of this facility as it is available only from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The patients will have to pay Rs 15 more to avail of this ad hoc service. Earlier, the hospital had been charging Rs 70 for the ultrasound test while private ultrasound centres charge Rs 250 to 400 for it. The Civil Surgeon, Ms Avinash Sharma, said as soon as the ultrasound machine of the hospital got repaired, this facility would be extended for 24 hours. |
6 Municipal Council posts vacant Hisar, August 22 The secretary was shifted to Hansi near here and no substitute was posted. The municipal engineer retired last month. The building inspector superannuated last year and the post has not yet been filled. A class IV employee is currently looking after the work of the auditor following the last incumbent’s transfer several months ago. The council’s only JE is looking after the duties of two other JEs whose posts have been vacant for sometime now. The drive against encroachments launched some time ago has also been halted in the absence of the secretary and the municipal engineer. Residents who visit the council office for routine tasks are also feeling the pinch since the paucity of staff has been causing inordinate delays. |
