Verma announces housing schemes

In his maiden speech on the occasion of Independence Day, the UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (Retd), today announced more housing schemes by the Chandigarh Housing Board in southern sectors and said the Administration would now focus only on hi-tech electronic and information technology-based industry.

He is a real-life hero who makes daredevil acts look like child’s play. Mr Gulshan Kalra, a fireman with the UT Fire Department, wears the smile of a proud brave man. He was awarded the President’s Fire Service Medal for Gallantry at the Independence Day celebrations here today for saving the lives of more than 25 people, including women and students, in two fire incidents in the city.

Burail Jail inmates to get better healthcare

“As many as 500 inmates lodged in Model Burail Jail will soon have an access to the best medical facilities within the jail premises. Moreover, women inmates will have more spacious rooms as cheque for Rs 5 lakh was given to the jail authorities here today on the occasion of Independence Day,” said the Deputy Superintendent of the jail, Mr D.S Rana, at a function here today.

Over 100 cattle heads kept in the cattle pound at Old Panchkula went missing under mysterious circumstances last night.
