Firemen fight flames for hours
Ludhiana, August 6
Goods worth lakhs were destroyed gutted in a major fire at a three-storey building housing a hosiery factory at Ram Nagar late last evening. The fire broke out around 8.00 pm at V.K. Dhir Hosiery unit. It took almost two hours for seven fire-engines to control the raging flames.

Medical college fee down, parents’ morale up

Aspiring medical students and their parents had a sigh of relief today when the management of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) admitted candidates, to the MBBS courses for a fee of Rs 1.5 lakh each.

Shagun scheme money sought back
Ludhiana, August 6
Irregularities have surfaced in the distribution of the shagun scheme money in the district. A number of persons fraudulently became beneficiaries and caused a loss to the state exchequer during the previous regime. The fraud came to the fore now after the audit department put an objection on the payments.

Uneasy calm in Bhaini Arora
Ludhiana, August 6
An uneasy calm prevailed in Bhaini Arora village here today following the sudden death of the 85-year-old man grandfather of an accused in the recent attack on two dalits of the village. Villagers alleged foul play.

Work on beautification of park begins
Ludhiana, August 6
Mr Surinder Dawar, Congress legislator, laid a foundation stone to mark the beginning of the work for beautification of Guru Hargobind Park, near CMC Chowk, here today. The work would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 6 lakh.

SSP marks inquiry into Khud Mohalla incident
Ludhiana, August 6
The district police has marked an inquiry into the Khud Mohalla episode, where a devastating fire had broken out in a factory killing 20 and seriously injuring 150 persons. The residents of the area had demanded an action against the owner of the factory, who, they claimed had stored highly inflammable chemical on the factory premises in violation of rules.

Ex-servicemen to wear black badges
Ludhiana, August 6
The Punjab and Chandigarh Ex-Servicemen League has called upon ex-servicemen, widows and their dependents to wear black badges on Independence Day to protest against the state government’s decision to introduce sale tax on CSD items. The league has threatened to boycott all rallies organised by the government if it fails to roll back the decision by September 1.

Elimination of nuclear weapons from earth will be true homage to the victims of Hiroshima. Dr L.S. Chawla, president, Dr Arun Mitra, general secretary and Dr Bharti Uppal, secretary, Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD), in a joint statement today said that it was unfortunate that the US had thrown first ever atomic bomb on human population at Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Protesting against the non-payment of dues, the Punjab State Aided School Teachers Union has decided to hold rallies on August 9.
Mr Teja Singh, state president of the union, said the third and fourth instalments of the arrears were due since long.

Govt to release salaries  of health employees
Ludhiana, August 6
The state government has agreed to release the salaries of the staff members of the Para-Medical and Health Employees Union, Punjab. Mr Karnail Singh, the Convener of the union, today said talks were on between union leaders and senior officers over the issue for the past many days. The state Finance Health departments, have agreed to release the salaries of the non-paid employees since January, 2003.
