Meters, oil worth crores destroyed
in fire Hisar, July 10 The fire was first noticed around 1 a. m. by two employees of the workshop. They tried to put it out using the small fire extinguishers kept there. However, it spread quickly as the large quantity of highly inflammable transformer oil stored there caught fire. The flames soon engulfed the room, where about 60,000 electronic meters were stored. Six fire engines of the local fire brigade were rushed to the workshop. However, these proved inadequate and four more engines were requisitioned from the nearby towns of Adampur, Hansi and Barwala. Firefighting was hampered seriously as water proved ineffective in controlling the flames leaping from the transformer oil drums. A large quantity of foam was then used to extinguish the fire. It took firemen about nine hours to bring it under control. An official spokesman of the nigam said preliminary enquiries indicated that the fire was caused by a short-circuit. However, the exact cause would be ascertained after a detailed probe. |
12,600 hectares to be under forest cover Chandigarh, July 10 In order to promote afforestation, the department has also decided to honour a village panchayat, which makes a significant contribution to the plantation drive, with the "Best Plantation Award". An official spokesman said here today that the department would give 1,000 CDs on "Plantation and Maintenance" to Eco Clubs functioning in schools to guide their members on maintaining plants. He said the 54th state-level Van Mahotsava would be celebrated at Karnal on July 13. The theme for this year's Van Mahotsava was "Forest and Water Conservation". Besides an exhibition, a quiz contest on forests, environment and water conservation would be held on the occasion. According to a report released by the Forests Survey of India, the forest cover in Haryana had increased by 790 sq. km. during the past three years, taking the green cover to 7.4 per cent of the total geographical area of the state. |
High Court Chandigarh, July 10 The directions are significant as, according to police sources, accused in many cases were getting away scot free after intimidating the witnesses. Today, issuing notice to Haryana’s Advocate-General and standing counsel for Chandigarh, a Division Bench of the high court, comprising Mr Justice Amar Dutt and Mr Justice Virender Singh, ruled that the guidelines were necessary to save the witnesses from undue pressure. Separate notices were not issued to the state of Punjab and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the two were already named as respondents in the case for protection filed by Mr Gurvinder Singh Samra — complainant in a bribery case registered against two judicial officers. The petitioner had earlier claimed that his life was in danger. Giving details, Mr Samra had contended that he had been shot at. Appearing before the court, counsel for the petitioner had initially stated that the bullet had grazed Mr Samra’s forehead. Earlier during the proceedings, Mr Rajan Gupta, appearing for the CBI, submitted that he would study the system prevailing in other countries for the protection of witnesses. The case will now come up for further hearing on July 15.
Bail denied If the prosecution story is to be believed, a Rewari resident was raping his daughter ever since she was six. Taking up his application for release on interim bail to attend another daughter’s wedding, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed his plea. Pronouncing the orders in the open court, the Bench, comprising Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar and Mr Justice S.S. Grewal, ruled: “The victim — applicant’s elder daughter — was raped for the first time when she was just five or six. The reprehensible behaviour of the applicant continued till she was 17. We see no reason to grant interim bail to the applicant. No leniency can be shown to such a depraved person by way of interim bail or parole”.
Directive to board Acting on a bunch of 11 petitions filed by students and societies running schools in Haryana, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed Haryana School Education Board to provisionally declare the results earlier withheld by it. The Bench, comprising the Chief Justice, Mr Justice B.K. Roy and Mr Justice Amar Dutt, also admitted the petitions. These will now come up for further hearing before a Division Bench on August 29. The board had earlier decided that private students cannot appear in class X examinations following which some of the institutes in the state had allegedly submitted the forms through the recognised schools. The results were withheld after the matter came to the board’s
notice. |
