Robbers strike near Mullanpur kill one, injure two

Mullanpur-Garibdass, July 3
A man was killed and two others were injured seriously when robbers struck at three places on the outskirts of Mullanpur-Garibdass village in the wee hours today. The robbers clad in underwears were eight or 10 in number and were armed with rods and batons.

A 16-year-old boy, Virender, was today admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital with symptoms of suspected cholera.

Clean overhead tanks in schools: Verma

All schools in the city have been asked to get overhead tanks cleaned in two days as water in storage tanks might have got contaminated during long vacation in the schools. The UT Administrator Justice O.P. Verma (retd) today asked the Home Secretary to issue the required directions.

SAS Nagar, July 3
The police here today arrested three persons for planning and executing the murder of Gurcharan Singh, Chairman, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhaddal. The three are B.S. Randhawa, one of the trustees of the college, his nephew Satvir Singh and Satvir’s friend, Rashpal.

Son of Verma’s driver in police net

The 20-year-old son of an official driver of Justice O.P. Verma, the UT Administrator and Punjab Governor, has landed in the police net for “selling” a fake permission sticker for the use of black film on car window and a red beacon light. The fake sticker was being sold to a Panchkula-based youth, Atul Arora, for Rs 5,000.

A promise unfulfilled
Chandigarh, July 3
It was on December 22, 2001, when my car (PB10Y 8442) was stolen from outside the school of my wife in Phase V of SAS Nagar. Within half-an-hour of the theft, messages were flashed to police control rooms of Punjab and Chandigarh, and an FIR was lodged at Phase I police station.

Vehicle owners change address in insurance papers
Chandigarh, July 3
‘‘Smart’’ vehicle owners in the city have devised novel ways to counter the move of the Chandigarh Administration and traffic police to change their addresses in the registration certificates (RCs) of the vehicles if they had moved from their previous residence. Instead of changing their address in the RCs, they are rather getting ‘duplicate’ copies of the insurance receipts with “changed address” after paying a meagre amount of Rs 50 only.

MOH finds 11 sweepers absent
Chandigarh, July 3
With the fear of cholera looming large over the city, the Medical Officer Health (MOH) today started tightening the noose around the delinquent sweepers marking 11 of them absent from the duty at 6.30 am in Sectors 11, 15 and 17.

MC gives warning to cattle owners

The campaign to rid the city of cattle as per special laws of Union Territory will be relaunched after July 14. A decision in this regard was taken today by the Municipal Corporation, official sources said.

CSIO instrument to detect fake currency
Chandigarh, July 3
An instrument to detect counterfeit Indian and foreign currency has been developed by the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) here. This is stated to be the first of its kind to be designed in the country. The CSIO will soon be filing for a patent.

Now axe falls on furniture market
Chandigarh, July 3
The Chandigarh Administration today demolished more than 70 structures in the unauthorised furniture market on the road leading to SAS Nagar at Badheri village. Besides this, several other encroachments, including a temple, were removed, thus freeing about 40 acres of government land from encroachments.

Sector 15 market cleared of encroachments
Chandigarh, July 3
The authorities today removed encroachments by shopkeepers in the Sector 15 booth market as part of the ongoing campaign to clear booth markets of encroachments. Twentyfive dhabas who had encroached upon more area than the permissible limit were affected by today’s drive. Fifteen shops were asked not to display their goods in the passages.
