Fresh non-bailable warrant against Yasin Malik

Jammu, July 2
A POTA court here today rejected JKLF supremo Yasin Malik’s plea for exemption from personal appearance and issued a fresh non-bailable arrest warrant against him in connection with the alleged recovery of one $ lakh from his aides.

Malik’s counsel prayed that the JKLF leader be exempted from personal appearance in the court due to health reasons, but presiding officer of the court P N Razdan rejected the plea and sent fresh warrant against Malik to the concerned police station for execution.

Opposing Malik’s plea, the prosecution argued that he was avoiding appearance in the court due to which an important case was dragging on.

Except for Malik, the other accused Shamima, alias Shazia, who is on bail, and Mushtaq Ahmed Dar, now in remand, were present in the court.

Malik and others are facing trial in connection with the seizure of $ one lakh and Rs 19,000 in Indian currency from Shamima and Mushtaq, who were arrested on March 23, 2002. — PTI

Elaborate security for Amarnath yatra
Tribune News Service

Jammu, July 2
Elaborate security arrangements are being made at MAM Stadium here for the Amarnath yatra on July 12. All pilgrims will begin the yatra from the stadium.

On the other hand, the Shiv Sena organised a demonstration here today in protest against the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir Government of stopping further registration of pilgrims as 1.7 lakh of them had already been registered.

The Shiv Sena said the government should not “play” with the sentiments of the Hindus by putting restrictions on the yatra. It warned that all those pilgrims, who have come here, would proceed to Pahalgam even if they were refused registration.

The security personnel were thoroughly scanning the stadium following arrest of the four top leaders of the Harkat-ul- Jehad on Sunday. Explosives and metal detectors were being used for scanning the area.

Terrorists had buried remote operated bombs in the stadium during the Republic Day parade a few years ago and six persons were killed.

This time the highest number of 17,405 pilgrims had been registered from Punjab followed by 15,777 from Delhi.

The government had decided to issue only 3,500 permits daily for the pilgrims to proceed to the cave shrine and 2,700 of them would be allowed to go through Pahalgam and 800 via the Baltal route, which is shorter but with a steep climb.

The authorities were not taking any chance in view of the terrorist attack on the base camp at Pahalgam last year.

Move to remove encroachments from Jhelum's bank

Srinagar, July 2
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has formulated a comprehensive plan to remove unauthorised structures on the banks of the Jhelum and other water channels flowing within Srinagar city.

Addressing a meeting of officers of LAWDA, Srinagar Development Authority (SDA), Local Bodies here yesterday, Housing, Urban Development and Tourism Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said the government was keen on beautifying the Srinagar city as the base camp for tourism in the valley.

He said all efforts would be made to save the Jhelum from encroachers, and added that a survey to identify illegal structures would be conducted soon.

The process of rehabilitation of the affected families of Bab-a-Demb, Sonar-i-Khul, Choonth Khul and Keta Khul would be initiated after a proper survey.

Mr Mir asked the SDA to make necessary arrangements for developing a residential colony for the rehabilitation of the affected families as soon as the requisite survey was completed.

He urged the engineers and the related executing agencies to help realise the dream of a clean and pollution-free city.

The minister stressed the need for the implementation of the VAMDAY scheme under which people below the poverty line would be provided shelter. This scheme, estimated at Rs 7 crore, envisaged to provide shelter heads to about 200 affected families during the current year. — UNI
