During the last organisational poll, only 3.5 crore members could be enrolled because of assembly elections in Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and some other states. He said fund raising was related to the membership drive as each active member was required to contribute Rs 100 every year to the party fund. The PCC delegates would give Rs 300 each, legislators and chairpersons of boards and corporations their month’s salaries, and the AICC members Rs 600 each. Besides, each MP was required to make “five friends of Congress”, each of whom would contribute Rs 10,000 to the party fund. For the next Lok Sabha elections, the Congress might tie-up with like-minded parties. The political environment was in favour of the party, as the people were disillusioned with the performance of the NDA government. He said the Vajpayee regime had failed to fulfil the promise of creating 1 crore jobs and building 20 lakh houses every year. The Congress had formed government in 15 states and been sharing power in two states. There was a considerable swing in favour of the party in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu, where the party was not in power. The ‘Chintan Manthan Shivir’ of the party to be held here from July 7 to 9, he said, would be, in effect Panchmarhi-II, where important decision regarding the party’s election strategy in five states would be taken. Five groups had been formed to draft the resolutions for the session, which would take care of political , economic and foreign affairs. |
