Ambanis told to be in court on July 7 New Delhi, May 26 The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Ms Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal, told Ambani’s counsel that his clients should positively appear in court on July 7. Mukesh and Anil Ambani, top brass of Reliance, had been summoned by the court it had made them liable as corporate heads for alleged offences by the company’s officials under the Official Secrets Act in procuring certain classified documents related to different Union ministries. Ambani’s counsel urged the court to exempt them from personal
appearance today because Mukesh had gone to Geneva to attend a meeting of the International Federation of Red Cross and Anil had to attend a meeting at Pennsylvania University’s Wharton School, besides the company’s board meeting abroad. The CBI counsel opposed the granting of exemption on the plea that such a relief could only be given after an accused had submitted himself to the jurisdiction of the court. The CBI had alleged that the classified documents had been recovered by the agency in a raid on the RIL’s premises at Le Merriden tower in the capital about three years ago, while it had been pursuing investigation against self-styled politician Romesh Sharma, who allegedly had links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Sharma had been charged by various probe agencies in 16 cases. Presently, he is in the Tihar jail in judicial custody.

Marandi is BJP vice-chief New Delhi, May 26 With an eye on the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Shivraj Singh Chauhan, MP from the state, has been promoted as general secretary from the present position of national secretary. A post of general secretary fell vacant due to the appointment of Mr Raj Nath Singh as Cabinet minister. A senior leader from Manipur, Mr Bharat Singh, and organising general secretary of the BJP’s Bihar unit, Mr Harinder, have been appointed national secretaries. Announcing this at a press conference here, BJP President Venkaiah Naidu ruled out any review of work allocation among the office-bearers till the completion of the forthcoming Assembly poll in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Mizoram. Meanwhile, to monitor the campaign for the Assembly poll, Mr Naidu today constituted a 15-member campaign committee. Naidu plans crucial poll meetings New Delhi, May 26 The first of the series of meetings, planned for the next few months, was held in Jaipur yesterday. Mr Naidu will meet office-bearers of different states in Hyderabad on May 29-30. The next meeting will be held at Gwalior on June 21 which will be followed by the national executive meeting at Raipur in July. The meetings have been planned so that the local media in these Congress-ruled states focuses on the BJP. He is also in the process of identifying party MPs from different states who could influence voters in the states going for the elections. These MPs, not belonging to these states, would be asked to work on that section of voters which comes from that particular state and has language affinity. At Jaipur, where Mr Naidu and Deputy Prime Minister addressed 5000-odd party workers, the BJP sought to turn the issue of providing job reservation to economically backward sections among the upper castes into a national issue, trying to deny credit to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot who had written a letter to the Centre asking for 14 per cent reservation to the economically backward sections. In Jaipur, Mr Naidu also gave a five-point programme to the party workers. The BJP president has asked partymen to expose the acts of commission and omissions of the Congress governments and to pay special attention to the verification and identification of voters’ list. He has also asked state leaders to undertake

23,500 kidnapping cases in 10 years Patna, May 26 Official sources yesterday said despite all attempts by the state government, the number of kidnappings had risen alarmingly. Kidnapping for ransom has now become a low-cost, low-income and highly profitable “business” in the state, they added. “Criminals have been now shifting to kidnapping rapidly,” the sources said. The incidents of dacoities, loot or house-breaking had either decreased or registered only a marignal rise, the sources added, quoting figures provided by the Crime Investigation Department (CID). “Kidnapping is a different type of crime as it involves the life of a person,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity. “The relatives of kidnapped people discourage strong police action, fearing reprisal from the kidnappers. The police has to act in a very professional manner to solve such cases and the recent safe release of a neurosurgeon was an outcome of such ‘scientific’ investigations,” he said.

SC: Raja Bhaiya to remain in Kanpur jail New Delhi, May 26 A Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by Raja Bhaiya against the Allahabad High Court’s order rejecting his plea for transfer from the Kanpur jail, a Bench comprising Mr Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Mr Justice Shivaraj V. Patil said it was not satisfied with the contentions raised by the petitioner. Raja Bhaiya’s counsel G L Sanghi said a special court in Allahabad had passed an order on April 26 for his client’s transfer to Naini jail as proceedings in two of the cases against him were going on in his court, while the other two had also been ordered to be transferred there. But the “judicial direction” issued by the special court, was “overruled” by an administrative order issued by the state government on April 29 on the ground that there would be law and order problem when he would be brought to Kanpur from Allahabad, Mr Sanghi said. Rejecting his arguments, the Bench said if there was a justification for an administrative order in such a case, the judicial order could be overruled. When the counsel alleged that Raja Bhaiya was being harassed because he had withdrawn the support to the Mayawati government along with his supporters, the Bench said such an argument had no relevance unless the Chief
Minister was made party to the case. |
Minister for better fund utilisation New Delhi, May 26 Mr Rana, who assumed the office here after having shifted from Textiles Ministry, said only effective implementation of rural development schemes would benefit the rural poor in full measure. Listing out various steps taken by the Ministry to combat the drought-like situation prevailing in different parts of the country, Mr Rana assured all possible help for the drought-hit areas. |
Not a single student passed Class X exam Korba (MP), May 26 While the country’s schools rejoiced over their performances, Government High School at Madanpur village in the district saw all its students failing in the Class X Board exams without even a supplementary for a single student, according to the village Sarpanch Dhajaram Rathiya. “There was no high school within 20 km of the hamlet and the villagers had for years been demanding from the state government that such a facility be established. The government accepted it in the 1998-99 academic session,” he said. “Even after the school started, the students are not availing proper benefit. It does not have a building of its own. The institution, too, is struggling with deficiencies from the word go.” How blatantly true this is has been proved by the latest results.
