16-yr-old stabbed to death
Chandigarh, April 8
In less than a month after his arrival in the city to prepare for medical entrance test, a 16-year-old Ferozepore district student, Randeep Singh, was ruthlessly stabbed to death by an unidentified mob, armed with chains and knives, near the Sansi Colony market in Sector 38. His companion was also injured.

Jacob lays Kajauli’s Ph IV foundation
Chandigarh, April 8
The Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT, Chandigarh, Lt-Gen JFR Jacob (retd) today, laid the foundation stone of the Phase IV of Kajauli augmentation water supply scheme, Chandigarh at Kajauli water works in Ropar district, 27 km from here. This project is scheduled to be completed by August 2005.

A Royal Bengal tigress has given birth to a litter of three cubs, two of them stillborn, here. The third cub is said to be doing fine. With this new arrival, the total population of Royal Bengal tigers has gone up to 22 at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park located on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway.

IAF gives Rs 8,000 relief to each injured
Chandigarh, April 8
The Air Force authorities today decided to give cheques of Rs 8,000 as ex-gratia to each of those injured in the MiG-21 BIS crash at the Vita Milk Plant residential colony in Ambala yesterday. In fact, the medical team handed over these cheques to two of the injured admitted to Civil Hospital, Ambala city.

Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai, a Maoist leader of Nepal, who studied in Chandigarh for five years between 1972 and 1977, is again in the news. He led a delegation on March 29 of Maoists holding peace talks with the Nepal Government.

An eight-year-boy, Munir, died after being crushed under the front tyre of a canter in Industrial Area, Phase 1, here today. According to the information available, the boy was standing, along with his mother, when the mishap took place.

Land acquisition: HC reserves orders

A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court yesterday reserved orders on a bunch of writ petitions challenging a notification issued by the Chandigarh Administration, expressing intention to acquire 29.07 acres in the revenue estate of Mani Majra “for developing residential complex”.

Judicial Magistrate acquitted

A local court today acquitted UT Judicial Magistrate(First Class), Jaswinder Singh, in a case registered against him for allegedly causing death due to rash and negligent driving.

Hearing in monkey menace case fixed

Taking up a public interest litigation on the basis of a letter written by PGI doctors regarding monkey menace at the institute, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today fixed April 28 as the next date of hearing.

New office for SDM (South)

The office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (South) will start functioning from the Sports Complex, Sector 42 from tomorrow. The present SDM (South), Ms Madhvi Kataria, will now operate from the new office.
