Tribune News Service

Shimla, April 4
Himachal State Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) President, Mr Amarjit Bawa, was picked up from his residence at Chapslee , here today early morning by the Haryana Police and released later when the Himachal Police intervened. A Kalka police station team headed by Mr Ishan Singh Rana, Station House Officer, arrived here at 4 am and took Mr Bawa away in connection with two cases registered against him in December 2001 (FIR No. 129 and 130). General secretary of the state INTUC, Thakur Das Sharma, and other leaders brought the matter to the notice of the higher police authorities here.

All exit points were sealed by Himachal police and the vehicle in which Mr Bawa was being taken away was intercepted at Dharampur. The police asked the Kalka team to show warrant of arrest which the party from Kalka team could not do.

Mr Bawa told the police that he had secured an anticipatory bail in the case from the Punjab and Haryana High Court soon after the incident had taken place. The bail was confirmed in July 2002 and even the Section 307 was also dropped from the FIR. He had also obtained regular bail in the cases against him registered by the Kalka police and it had to give a week’s notice before arresting him.

Mr Bawa returned to Shimla from Dharampur and complained to the Superintendent of Police alleging that he was illegally taken away from his residence by a Kalka police party. His driver Anil was beaten up, he alleged. He also alleged that Mr Pal Chand, a sub-inspector at Lakkar Bazar police Chowki was hand in glove with the Kalka police and he did not inform senior officers about it. He said the Kalka police did not arrest him as it would have invited the contempt of court proceedings.
